Ten Fired After Wii Radio Contest

radio.jpgAfter a 28-year old woman died while participating in a Wii contest, the management of the radio show responsible for the contest have fire ten people.

The radio station, KDND 107.9, fired five radio hosts and five staffers who were behind the “Hold Your Wee For A Wii” contest. While the show was on air, the DJs laughed at the warnings some people phoned in to tell them, jokingly dismissing it all by saying that “all contestants signed signed a release”; the radio station wasn’t to blame for personal injuries. Because of this, the police won’t investigate further into the death of Jennifer Strange, who died of water intoxication.

[Update] After reviewing taped conversations, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department have launched an investigation, which, according to Sgt. Timothy Curran, could take a few weeks. The results will be sent to the local district attorney, to determine whether or nor to charge the radio DJs and staffers.

Actually the police have decided to open an investigation afterall.

    Reported earlier today:

“But in audio recordings which have been posted on the Internet, the DJs are heard joking about contestants dying of water intoxication, even referencing the death of Matthew Carrington, a student who died after drinking too much water during a fraternity hazing. A caller, who identified herself as Eva, also phoned in to the show to warn that the stunt could kill, but she was dismissed by being told that contestants had “signed releases, so we’re not responsible.”

In light of the new information from the audio tapes, an investigation has been launched, stated a spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Timothy Curran said, “We have decided we will open a death investigation which will take weeks and on conclusion our findings will be forwarded to the local district attorney to decide whether to lay criminal charges.”

Well now I think that those guys do need to be taught a lesson since they knew there were serious health risks involved with this type of contest (yeah death is pretty serious) and they didn’t make it clear to the contestants how dangerous it could be.

they should get a prison sentance for incompetence, firing is pretty mild imo.

  3. amjiva Says:

well, at least one person died from incompetence. I don’t think it gets any more non-mild than that.

  4. Doom Says:

Stupid that they fired them so late. The station will definately be sued now.

I’m not familiar with usa law, but I do know that it would be very feasonable in my country to sue them. And we aren’t even the sueing kind:P
