Nintendo just announced that the Wii sold 3.19 million units worldwide in 2006, just short of the promised 4 million units. 1.25 million were sold in North America, 1.14 in Japan and 800,000 in Europe. Nintendo also revealed some Virtual Console stats; 1.5 million games were bought and downloaded, where 1.4 million consoles are hooked up to the Internet. They’re still on track to ship 6 million before the end of March 2006. This, combined with the success of the DS, contributed to record profits in 2006 for Nintendo, a massive $991 million.

1I don’t think there is any confusion between sold and shipped here. They shipped 3 million units, they sold 3 million units. You can tell since they are still sold out worldwide.

2The financials talked about shipment to stores apparently they produced well over the 4 million they predicted but only 3.19 million physically reached shelves before the end of 2006 due to time taken transporting consoles from factory to store.
Nintendo also upped its figures for March 2007 to 7 million as they are producing over a million a month at the moment.
Shipments and sales are the same at the moment because the consoles totally sold out. Its not like when Sony announces number of consoles shipped and half of them are still on shelves.
Other stats from the financial report 1.4 million Wiis online already.
1.5 million Virtual Console games sold.
Profit up over 70% on last year.
3.5 million unique users playing DS online with over 100 million games played.
Nearly 36 million DS consoles sold worldwide etc etc
If anyone from Digital Battle wants to update the article i’ll forward them the actual financials release as i received it with all the details announced.

4Great news for Nintendo indeed. Hope they can keep it up for the next couple of years at least … maybe not at the same frantic pace but still enough to keep them in the race and profitable so more good things can come.

11No kiding, that has to be at least a quarter of what the 360 has sold, and it’s only been out for about a sixth of the time.
