Cheap DX10 Graphics Cards From Nvidia
February 5th, 2007 by Tobias Dahl in Business, Hardware, News, PC, Technology
While DirectX 10 brings some great benefits to games, there are still only two cards on the market supporting DX10, Nvidia’s 8800 GTX and 8800 GTS, both quite expensive for the average hardware buyer. But Nvidia has new DX10 cards for all those with a tight budget. The two new cards, 8600 GT and 8600 Ultra, are both built using 80 nm technology and are going for $150 and $180, respectively.
The Ultra runs at 500 MHz with 512 MB RAM, while the GT runs at 350 MHz and has 256 MB RAM. This is certainly good news, since bother card offer great performance, at under the third of the price for at 8800 GTX, which goes for around $600 these days. The new graphics cards will be available in a few months, coinciding with the launch of ATI’s R600.

I’ll still wait for the R600, they will be a cheaper version of the R600 at launch, next to the flagship of course. Unless of course the reviews show that Nvidia is on top, which I doubt at this point.

By the end of the year there will be some real choices. Hopefully next year there will be another GPU maker as well. Always choosing between two vendors is getting pretty boring. Although I will admit I do like Nvidia products.

I doubt anyone can challenge ATI and Nvidia, only Intel has the ressources and cash, but they’re only interested in on-board graphics. Actually Intel will release on-board DX10 graphics later this year, but don’t expect to run Crysis on it, at least not on high settings
In 2008 we’ll see new GPU architecture, 65nm, much faster DDR4. GPUs will be much faster, cooler, and more power efficient. An Microsoft will update DX10, and we’ll finally see game running natively on DX10. 2007 is just a transition year for PC hardware and software.

Re: Jim2k don’t forget ATI’s new GPU is a streaming multicore processor not unlike the the “Cell BE”!
They are using a new RapidMind API called “CTM” Close to Metal and it is testing out to put both DX10 and OpenGL’s dick in the dirt by 32 times!
Read the bottom line. This is the future of game development on all platforms!

I would love this card! But spent too much already on Nvidia!

I agreee … I think that 2008 is really the year for Vista and DX10 and hopefully lots of GREAT PC titles designed with DX10 in mind from the jump. Alan Wake will be ready for 2008 and maybe Gears? You know of any other killer titles coming for DX10 enabled systems?

See morons go out and by cheap products like this, u cant sli it at all with it not even beating a 8800gtx. I say forget these and get a 8800 or 8900 go up not down. You never wanna go down and this is new technology u know? The 8800 is dieing in price and that 8600 ultra has a nice price but 2 of them would barely beat 1 8800. I say get 1 8800 or 8900 then wait a long time till it shows age and u sli that.
Im happy that this came out and the 8900 will come out so when have a selection. But take my word for it ive seen the the clock rates. The ultra is the best one at 64 pixels but even te 8800 pixels are at 92, thats a massive jump. Where the 8800gtx are at 128 pixels, i just see these series kinda like the 1800 cards. The x1600-1800 we kinda skipped to the 1900.
1800 were gonna be the biggest badasses out there! at 500 bucks and i can get it for like 150. Hold on to ur money and wait and see what else comes out. You need ATI to come out so the prices can go down.
