Blu-ray Won The War (Says Sony)

February 13th, 2007 by Darren Stevens in Articles, Business, Technology, Video

bdhd.jpgWith Blu-ray discs outselling HD-DVD discs by a factor of 2:1 for the month of January, Sony is confident enough to declare that the war is over and proclaim Blu-ray as the winner. Kinda like when George W. Bush declared America “winning” the war in Iraq three years ago.

Blu-ray outsold HD-DVD because many new titles were released in January, titles that were already available on the HD-DVD format for months. The only way of comparing the two will be when a movie is released simultaneously on both formats, like the recently released Babel and The Departed. Expect the first sales results in a week or two.

  1. Jim2k Says:

Bush decalring US as winner… we all know how things are now :)
Seriously though, I think Blu-ray has the edge, since there are two million PS3s on the market already. Blu-ray might be worse than HD-DVD, but but I doubt anyone would buy a HD-DVD player if they already won a PS3.

  2. Ruined Says:

I suppose if this is the case then the Wii won the war over PS3 twice

Oh and the DS must be celebrating the second anniversary of the unconditional surrender of PSP

  3. The Wicker Man Says:

i just like the name blu ray…. but i hate sony but i love the name blu ray. its on my pc already to burn shit… so go blu ray.

  4. Quartecks Says:

Is Sony this desperate? They still had plenty of time to actually win the “war”. Why pull a cheap shot?

  5. Doom Says:

    Rofl, nice work armin.

They only said BD sold more discs.

And that is quite a telling thing, since BD is on the market for a few months, compared to HD 1,5 years’s.

Sony never said they won the format war, those are your words. But suck up the grief man, BD is a better format anyway.

  6. Doom Says:

    @ ruined LOOOOOOOOL

”I suppose if this is the case then the Wii won the war over PS3 twice”

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

I say nothing more on this ahbhahahaha! Oh man.

  7. Alex Says:

Hate to disappoint you doom (again), but Sony did say what armin reports:

    -QUOTE-
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment worldwide president David Bishop made the comments to trade newspaper Video Business in reaction to widely reported Neilsen/VideoScan sales figures indicating that Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD in January by a ratio of 2:1.

“The message that we’re going to put out to the consumer now is, now it is safe to make a choice,” explained Bishop. “No more fence-sitting is needed… We have a critical mass of content, we have the biggest mass of consumer electronics companies in the world supporting this format. That has moved Blu-ray into the forefront.”

  8. Doom Says:

and Linking sony to a much-hated politician is realllyyyyy a new low in your sensation-posting armin, I wouldnt have thought you’d go there:(

  9. Ruined Says:

Doom just to explain in really simple retard proof English (in other words so you have some hope of potentially comprehending)

What I meant by this is if Sony is claiming selling 2x as many discs as another format = winning then Nintendo sells 4x the number of Wiis that Sony does PS3s in Japan and USA atm therefore by Sony’s measure (2x = won) Wii has won twice.

However, if you are correct and Sony didn’t say this then forget I said anything as I was mocking that statement.

I know it is difficult for you to understand so here it is in Playstation fanboy l33tspeak

“OMGZ noobz got haxxord by l33t PS3 with uber graphics, big up da PS3. Sony PWNs HD-DVD x 2, pimples, acne girlz digz the Playstations for mucho sex. Sellz x 2 = OMGWTFPWND!”

Hope that speaking in your language helps you understand slightly more. Sorry if my translations slightly off I don’t speak fluent TARD

  10. Quartecks Says:

Do you realize that you speak noob with an intelligent accent?

  11. Doom Says:

Ehm, alex, point in your quote please, where they claim the format war is over? They just said the consumer can buy their product, for it has a certain amount of units sold.

    Poor you.

  12. Doom Says:

Ruined, you dont make sense. This was about a cd format, not about gamesystems. I’m happy you are glad the wii sold 4 million. But I’m sure you wanna pretend you know stuff too.

  13. Quartecks Says:

… Uhh, four is still twice as many as two no matter what you’re talking about.

  14. Anuban Says:

Well as much as I like HD-DVD (since I have one for my 360 and it is working out really great for me) I do think that currently Blu-ray has an edge. I was just looking at the releases for Blu-ray this month and there have been more movies released on BD than on HD-DVD so for people who want to watch movies in HD there are simply more options available to them on BD. Forget the technical aspects of which holds more, etc. the driving force for consumers will be the quality of and the amount of movies available on the platform.

Currently the only movie studio that has pledged exclusive support for ONLY HD-DVD is Universal (Warner and Paramount also make BD and New Line has not delivered an HD-DVD movie yet). Two of the other Seven major studios are doing both (Warner, Paramount) with the other Five (Sony Pictures, MGM, Fox, Disney, and Lionsgate) making only BD movies. So to be honest if I was really just a hardcore movie buff I would probably choose a Blu-ray player. But as a gamer AND a movie fan for now the 360/HD-DVD makes more sense. Soon however if the PS3 also becomes a really good gaming console (lots of good games available) then the balance of power will shift and getting the PS3 with BD included will be the better choice for people who play gamer and also are movie fans. But to me if it is just games then the 360 will still have the advantage.

I just think that unless the HD-DVD camp can get at least two more studios to produce HD-DVD movie releases then Blu-ray will win by default. Hard to believe though since I do think that HD-DVD is really solid and I love how you can access the options without having to pause the movie.

  15. Quartecks Says:

Yeah, but if you get enough (not a lot, just enough) dust or manage to scratch a Bluray disk it wont work at all.

  16. Doom Says:

quarter iq: bd has got the best anti scratch protection to date.

  17. Quartecks Says:

This is true, but that doesn’t protect from dust, and it is still possible, although unlikely, to scratch.

  18. Jim2k Says:

Christ doom would you just stfu for once with you propaganda crap… No one pays attention to you because you sound like a brainwashed kid.

  19. josh Says:

Tell me exactly how hd-dvd is better than blu-ray, excluding price, I dont know much about hd-dvd.

  20. Quartecks Says:

The only real thing other than price would be, as I said before, if you get too much dust, or anything else, on bluray disks they wont work. At all.

  21. Keil Joy Says:

” The only real thing other than price would be, as I said before, if you get too much dust, or anything else, on bluray disks they wont work. At all ”

doesn’t that normally apply to all compact discs??

  22. Zac Says:

    *explode*

  23. Quartecks Says:

Well if you coat a DVD with dust yeah, but usaully it only causes the disk to skip etc, and even that takes a bit. Bluray disks use every track to store information (which is why they hold so much) but this means that if they get dusty, or if they get scratched, which is harder to do on them by the way, the disk will not work at all.

  24. Monnaay Says:

quartecks, the only reason blu ray hold more data is because the wave length of the laser that is used while burning has shorter wave length of all the laser that are out there right now. I herd pioneer is working on using ultra violet to burn discs which will store as much as 500GB.

  25. Gekko Says:

blu-ray will not win… it is a fact. adult industries choose HD-DVD… the only reason the VHS won despite being inferior was because of the adult industry… its been game over for blu-ray for sometime now

  26. Doom Says:

True gekko, betamax was defeated due to the porn and sony’s unwillingness to include it.

But if that is so, where are the massive hd sales? Exactly, people who use porn dont need HD, dvd is plenty, it costs much more to shoot a movie in HD, so the porn itself isnt in HD.

Basically, the pornstudios will reallign themselves with the bd, since it seems that bd, or a hybrid of these 2 will become the new standard.

  27. Quartecks Says:

Sorry to break it to you guys, but contrary to popular belief, porn is not that strong a force as to decide a winner between these two.

  28. Doom Says:

Porn made the internet. It’s one of the us’s biggest export items… next to weapons, ofcourse.

sex and shooting, and on the go some christian morality with a snuff of racism, gotta love that country hehehe.

  29. Challenge Says:

    (Cough Stupid Amreican government Cough)

  30. Kaiser Soze Says:

I cant belive that anyone would buy a HD-DVD because you can watch Porno on it. That would be very lame. It’s cheaper to go online, endless porn only clicks away. 80% or more of the internet is porno. The reason VHS won over the other formats back in the 1980’s was because it was the cheapest video. I still think DVD will be around for a VERY long time

  31. Shaka Says:

Internet people using online forums hear me out, stop posting this lame pathetic blog as realiable source for gaming news its nothing but your common anti-Sony blog paid by microsoft.

    ‘ ‘ With Blu-ray discs outselling HD-DVD discs by a factor of 2:1 ‘ ‘

Correction its 3:1 and its only going to get better from here ,h-dvd never had any change and its going to die sooner or later its just around the conner march when PS3 drops in pal version and its gonna be the final nail in cofin of h-dvd.

    h-dvd RIP.

  32. Challenge Says:

what is the main difference between HD DVD and Blu Ray?

Certainly that much more space is better than the little crappy extra feature of the HD DVD

  33. Shaka Says:

‘ ‘ what is the main difference between HD DVD and Blu Ray? ‘ ‘

    3:1 sales ratio this year.

Blu-ray passing HD DVD total sales since inception in 3 months despite a significant numerical, market presence, and pricing head start for HD DVD

A 3-6x advantage in player installed base

    Much better studio support

    Much better release schedule

    25GB BD vs. 15gb h-dvd.

    and then some.

    FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Challenge Says:

Well WTF are these noobs talking about? frikkin losers

  35. Doom Says:

@ kaiser ”I still think DVD will be around for a VERY long time”

I think so too. BD/HD players can play dvd, so there is no way BD is neccecary yet. My guess is 5 more years of dvd. Many people dont got the big tvsets yet, maybe 1 more world cup from now.

  36. Monarky Says:

“5 more years of dvd”????? What?

In 5 years halographic disks will be in wide use over BluRay. You’ll go to your electronics store and buy OLED HDTV screen by the meter or yard. Then simply hang the foldable material on your wall. It will be cheap!

Even 55″ LCD’s are expected to be under $500 by end of next year. Some incredible steps have been made to lower the costs of LCD’s. When they get OLED life span up above 100,000 hours they’ll be extremely cheap as well!

    Doom!
The truth is by end of May, Sony’s Eyetoy HD will be out for under $200. Then almost anyone can afford to make 1080P Porn!

OMFG…. that’s a scary thought with some of the posters here!

But yeah Doom Commercial 1080P Quality HD Video cameras are already coming down in price even with only two companies making them. But all we had during BetaMax days were Sony and Pansonic on commercial 1″ beta machines.

For BluRay? Well I second what Shaka said above!

  37. Quartecks Says:

Holo disks are still in the R&D stage. It’s going to take waaay more than five years for them to be the norm.
