Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto will receive a lifetime achievement award at this year’s Game Developer Conference. As you probably know, Miyamoto created Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and other famous Nintendo characters. He’s been called the “Spielberg of videogames”, and has previoously received numerous awards for his achievements.

Other awards will also be given; Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov will receive the “First Penguin Award”, for “diving headfirst into unknown territory” with Tetris, game composer George Sanger will receive the Community Contribution Award, for his work on music and sound design, and finally, Indie game advocate Greg Costikyan will receive the Maverick Award for his work and promotion of indie games and developers.

Warren Spector is clearly the “Spielberg of video games”. Not Miyamoto. He’s created both Ultima Underworld games, I think, System Shock, Thief games, & the Deus Ex games.
