Analyst: Wii In 30% Of Homes By 2011

February 22nd, 2007 Posted in Articles, Business, Hardware, Wii

wii1.jpgFinancial analysts at Merryl Lynch predict that the Nintendo Wii will be in 30% of U.S. households by 2011, and in 33% of Japanese households. The analyst with the bold prediction, Yoshiyuki Kinoshita, based his decision the recent sales data, where the Wii is leading the sales in Japan, Europe and North America. 30% of U.S. households is roughly 100 million consoles, plus another 50 million in Japan. Currently Nintendo is manufacturing 1 million per month, so it would take over 12 years to make them all. Something doesn’t seem to add up. Ah, yes, it’s the non-sense coming from the analyst.

    100 million! No way.

  2. Quartecks Says:

They have five million already, and PS2 got to 100 million…. Though that is a pretty big number… Meh, we’ll see.

  3. Zac Says:

Time, time, and time will tell. And only time.

  4. Quartecks Says:

If Wii becomes really popular it would eventually build up enough force to mushroom the sales (like PS2), but, Zac, you are completely right, only time will tell if Wii is strong enough to pull this off.

  5. Zac Says:

Yeah exactly. There’s no point arguing about who’ll “win” the console wars, because anything could happen, and we won’t find out for another 3-4 years.

  6. Ryan Says:

It doesn’t have to take 12 years to make, who’s to say that Nintendo won’t increase monthly production of Wiis in that time period? It’s only difficult now because it is new, but over time, they will master it and rule the world! Well, 30% of it anyway.

  7. Stuckey Says:

Hmm….100 million isnt the right number.

The US just reached 300million citizens, not 300 million households…

perhaps the person who did this article should rethink thier numbers.

  8. Zac Says:

I guess he couldn’t find 5 cents, but found some boxxors instead.

  9. Ruined Says:

I think this analyst is pulling figure out his arse. 30 percent of households aren’t going to buy a games machine even one aimed at non gamers.

The 100 million figure might be doable depending on if wii sales stay as strong

Interesting though that analysts are changing their tune and backing wii now. Pre launch they all backed ps3

  10. Evander Says:

Being an analyst must be the easiest job in the world.
All you have to have is a degree in B.S. They obviously don’t need to know anything about math.

Honestly I think the WII will be a flop and these are my reasons. The graphics suck badly, side not theyre not even good as the ps2 graphics. Saying that the gamecube had better graphics so something wrong. The new style of gameplay seems really really kool. But I still see the ps3 and xbox360 and pc winning.

I think more people are excited on how you can play with the game now. But in my opinion keyboard and mouse still pwns on fps games. Its a hard call cuz i can imgaine myself playing madden, racing, skating, basketball, maybe baseball on the wii mote. Then again other stuff can be kool on it. The major set back is the graphic issue with this console. Right now everybody is going OMFG this is gonna be amazing.

To me this will be another N64 system where it was massive poplular then faded away. I think its a great idea but something that’ll reach one million. But nintendo and MS are actuall worried about the gamers where sony worried about their movies too.

I dunno its a hard call saying anything on this cuz I personally havent played it. But that tennis stuff looks really fun, aside from wii sports. You’re really lagging in what games could be great for the console. Then again it always comes down to games. These are some of the games i see having a hard time playing on the console.

3rd person shooter, sports -not baseball-,racing…mostly this types. I heard FPS will be amazing for it!

  12. Zac Says:

Nice post. Have you played Wii Sports yet? it’s strangely very fun, especially with friends over.

I’d have to disagree about ps2 graphics being better than the Gamecube’s. Just look at games like Starfox Adventures, that game had some great visuals for it’s time.

Only time will tell. So far Wii is selling more than ps3. If sony can change that, then good for them, but let’s wait and see what happens when the next-gen market is more mature.

    ????????????????? why

  14. Quartecks Says:

Technically Wii is more powerfull than an Xbox, so in the most basic sense it whould be able to pull off Halo and Halo2. the problem is that the graphics just haven’t been realized yet.

And as a side note: Wii sports has some amazing visuals. The problem is that the Mii’s detract from it, but if you take a close look at none Mii objects they are very detailed.

“The graphics suck badly, side not theyre not even good as the ps2 graphics.”

Wrong. The graphics capabilities are better on the Wii than the PS2.

  16. Kaiser Soze Says:

The Graphics on the Gamecube were also better than PS2, and so were xbox graphics. That still didn’t prevent PS2 from being the bestselling system. And try dig the visuals in the Metroid Prime games. And the Wii IS much more powerfull than the gamecube. But it just doesn’t have the extreme specs of the 360 or PS3. So what? Big deal

  17. Quartecks Says:

    High five for facts!

  18. Quartecks Says:

    You didn’t answer my question.

  19. Zac Says:

    He’d get a 360.

Better games? It’s all a matter of opinion. And experience.

  20. Kaiser Soze Says:

“I went for ps2 instead of xcross simply because the games on ps2 where and still are, way better.”

You mean better gameplay? Then why are you bashing Nintendo now? The Wii got awesome gameplay, same same with the DS.

  21. Zac Says:

    My thoughts exactly.
