Microsoft has recently released a “fix” for a security vulnerability that could Xbox 360 owners to run their own applications and operating systems.

The hacker tells that he had discovered a way to break through the shield and run their own software, including systems such as Linux on the Microsoft console. The hacker has soon cooperated with Microsoft to fix this issue.

“Together with a method to inject data into non-privileged memory areas, this vulnerability allows an attacker with physical access to an Xbox 360 to run arbitrary code such as alternative operating systems with full privileges and full hardware access,”

Microsoft doesn’t describes the Xbox update as a security fix. Instead they list it is an “operating system update”, without publishing a changelog. The update was done via Xbox Live, any game released after 20. February 2006 will have this fix included, the representative said.

The original Xbox is still a popular hacker target. Mod-chips for the Xbox called let consumers play pirated discs and other applications. The challenge for hackers is to bypass the protection and run their own homebrew code or load another operating system.
