GameSpy has announced that they will be providing multiplayer technology to publishers for the Nintendo Wii. The service will offer “offer community features, such as friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities and comprehensive rankings data.” This would probably mean that third party developers are getting the online support they deserve.
Nintendo is notorious for crappy online services. Compared to the Playstation Network and Xbox Live services, the Wii looks like it’s comparable to the N64 Disk Drive. In most games, there is absolutely no communication or interaction. Most online games are strictly multiplayer to a certain degree, and that’s it. Maybe this is finally the end of the “friend code”?

1Oooh. Hopefully this fleshes out into something that a lot of developers use.
