Blu-Ray Beats HD-DVD… Again

March 14th, 2007 Posted in Business, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

For the second month in a row, Blu-Ray has come out on top in the next-generation format wars against the HD-DVD. The sales are at an impressive 250,000 compared to 150,000 for the month of February. The reason for these sales may be that the PS3 already has a Blu-Ray player built into it, or it may also be the factor that the discs are $5 cheaper than the competition.  The Xbox 360 also offers an HD-DVD add-on, but that component has to be purchased seperately for about $199.

I dont know what to here :\. I have over 6k of dvds… so far i cant really tell a difference from dvd to blu ray. And I meant regular DVD not hd dvd, course im using a 1080p samsung tv. So many cuz of that my movies are running 720p res but its still to close to name a winner. Like the article said u have 1.5 million consoles sold so they have an advantage. I honestly dont care who wins. Its like a graphics card for a computer theyre all the same. Different designs, makers, and models of that card. They basically spit out the same graphics, and look different with a logo from another company.

I kinda see it this way with blu ray and hd dvd, they both play movies in HD at max 1080p res. Theyre really no difference in them unless who ever has the contract. Another, this is all about money not a better format. Honestly, you only need 15 gbs to run a money and only 10 max for a next gen game. I like the name blu ray better plus I have the 5x burner in my pc.

Its not like vhs and betamax this time, they both are kinda the same. The difference between betamax and vhs was that betamax was actually better! Everyone my age and older (20) knew if u would rewind the tape it would hurt it. Where betamax when u would watch the movie it would somewhere rewind itself at the sametime so u would age the tape from rewinds :P

At this point in their lifecycle, I guess the one that’s winning is the one whose sales suck less. These numbers are from the entire month? How long have these formats been out anyway?

Both of the formats have been out longer than that. Maybe not the 360 HD-DVD (which was released in October or November) and the PS3 (November) but the actual formats have been out near 12-18 months … somewhere along those lines.

I ran into a guy at Best Buy who said he heard about Blu-Ray in the late 80’s early 90’s, although who knows if they knew what they could have done with it then. CD’s were just getting big and DVD’s weren’t even big until after 2000. Maybe 1080p format DVD’s will take a long time to get popular as well.
I think the best thing to do right now (still) is to save your money and wait, or if you want to spend some money just to say you have a player that will run 1080p DVD’s, buy the $1,200 player that plays both formats.

Blu-ray’s a cooler name then hd-dvd, also I already have a ps3, so thats where my choice lies in the next gen format. And also, blu-ray discs are cheaper? Didnt know that.

  7. The Wicker Man Says:
