New Line gets Gears Movie Rights
March 20th, 2007 by Gibran Nawaz in Business, Xbox360
New Line has won the rights for the movie adaptation of Gears of War. Stuart Beattie will be writing, and Wyck Godfrey will be producing the film. Peter Jackson was the original executive producer, but then hesitated to continue with the movie because of the budget. There is no information regarding who will be starring in the film. I hope they keep Marcus Fenix’s voice the same as Bender.

This is probably the worst idea for a movie ever. Okay Gears is a great looking game but that is it! How could it ever be a decent movie … the story is garbage. And the part that gets me is that they wasted NO TIME in making this Third person shooter with basically no story into a movie. Incredible … oh well another bad game to movie project. Laughable … and predictable but I am shocked they moved so fast with this. Meh. This is one time I am actually hoping Monarky goes into a tirade … this is just a lame idea and really just once again shows how lazy Hollywood is. On the other hand it must be something for CliffyB to see an idea he has had for years not only become one of the best selling video games in history but is also going to be a movie (which is like so many other movies I don’t know how it can be successful as a movie). Wow. How do I get a life like that?
It just really hit me that this cannot be a movie … look at it this way … the best thing about this game is the graphics and there is no way you can make a big deal out of active reload as a game mechanic in a movie … nor is cover a big deal in movies. So really all the things that CliffyB says makes Gears so cool to play are useless for a movie. So what are we left with … marines and monsters … wow … so original. And the best part is we get Pitch Black 2 as well since we have the Kryll .. this movie is going to get torn apart if it does ever get made. It is just so unoriginal for a movie and with nothing to really draw you in substantially. This will not work and should be reconsidered immediately. Let games be games … especially FPS/TPS games. Now GoW is a different beast … it actually has a solid story and an interesting main character and since it is an action/adventure game it translates too screen much better than a shooter would. What shooter has ever made a successful transition from game to movie? None. Will this time be any different … highly unlikely. The only shooter that has a chance is Halo (maybe HL2 as well) and that is because of the depth of the story. Maybe they should wait until Gears 2 to start thinking about a movie. This seems like a huge mistake.

This got me thinking that those lazy ass executives in Hollywood are also thinking about making the following games into movies:
Bioshock
Crysis
F.E.A.R.
HL2
Oblivion
UT3 (since it now has a campaign)
Lost Planet
Dead Rising
Crackdown
Stalker
DMC
And I probably missed a couple … what do you folks think? How about taking a stab at what games hollywood will embrace next.

A Metal Gear Solid movie would be amazing! Except they sorta did that in the third disk of Subsistence…

Games, books and comics plus sequels is all they seem to be making. I would like to actually see some more original movies coming out.
I might be interested in a FarCry movie, even though its a bit older, but so is HL; the first one would interest me more than the second.

They are making a FarCry movie actually … but you won’t like this … Uwe Boll is going to direct it. Yep … can you believe it? I just know it is going to suck … which is why I just wish Hollywood would stop this BS and go back to hiring creative people who can come up with original ideas … instead of sitting back and waiting for the next great game and snatching up the movie rights to it. You can bet if Heavenly Sword does well that will be a movie. If Bulletwitch was a success you can bet that would be a game. I also think that Dark Sector is probably going to become a game. Oh well I guess now is the time to just make a great game and hope Hollywood wants to be on your … well you know.
