Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! British game site onesoldier.co.uk compared two of the most powerful game engines today, Unreal Engine 3 and CryEngine 2. Actually, the site only compares two games using their respective engines, Unreal Tournament 3 and Crysis. For now, it looks as if CryEngine comes out on top, but in reality, it’s impossible to compare the two since both UT3 and Crysis are months away from release. Either way, check out the comparison shots and judge for yourself.

WTF???!!! How can you compare the two like you are doing? The art styles are totally different! Obviously for tropical settings CryEngine is probably best but it is not nearly as flexible as UE3 … I’ll wait to reserve any judgement until I play both games and can compare more than just how real tropical settings look vs a cool artistic style chosen deliberately … it is UNREAL Tournament afterall.

I agree, from a realistic point of view, CryEngine 2 is the best I’ve ever seen, the weather effects, physics, lightning are second to none. Artistically however, UE3 comes out on top, I doubt any other engine would have rendered the atmosphere of Gears of War as cool as it was, or UT3 for that matter.

CryEngine 2 looks absolutely amazing. I’m incredibly psyched for Crysis as well. But it is true, we can’t compare them yet. Let’s hope they are both awesome engines since the gamers will be the ones to benefit :)
