The new E3 has pissed off quite a few people, mostly independent developers who would be unable to show off their wares at the show. World’s second-largest games publisher is not satisfied with it either: Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot said at Ubidays that the company considers E3 to be “only for US” and that Ubidays, their gamer’s day event, is their answer to it: “We decided to do E3 but in France and call it Ubidays.”
Other than E3, he talked about the publisher’s newly formed casual games division, saying that they plan to do a “lot more” with it. He also talked about the current-gen platforms: “Those machines are selling very fast, and we think with the Wii, the DS, the PS3 and 360, we will have new games that help more customers come to the market.”

1Uh … Unless I missed something Ubisoft is THIRD behind No.1 EA and No. 2 Activision in the video game publishing biz. I just wrote two college papers on Activision that got me two A’s so I think I know a little something about this topic. If Ubi did manage to overtake Activision can you please point me to a link or someplace that actually says this? Thanks.

2Correction, Nintendo is the number two publisher in the U.S , Activision is 4, Sony at 4, and Take Two at 5.

3At the time I was not talking about U.S. rankings … I was talking about World Wide and presently Activision is (according to Gamesutra) number 3 in the world because they slipped a notch. I reread my paper and in it I did say that for the U.S. Activision was number 2 and they are so in a way I did get part of my initial alert wrong. But I was only off by one Worldwide and was spot on about the U.S. … at any rate both Gamasutra and Activision’s own Annual report say the same thing.
Below you will find Gamasutra’s the current list for 2006 with the 2005 rankings being in parathesis, so according to them Activision moved down one and that is not that hard to believe given the strength of the DS and the Wii. It still means that Activision is the 2nd largest 3rd party video game developer and actually I believe that was what I was getting at in my papers … now that I think about it I actually took the three console makers out of the picture because they have a built in advantage.
Plus as I said I did go by the info listed in the Annual report which does say they are number two in the U.S. and a leader world wide. In any case Ubi is far from 2nd … you are going to have to make sure that you do better research in the future before you publish articles with incorrect information Raj, otherwise your articles will have no credibility:
1. (1.) Electronic Arts
2. (4.) Nintendo
3. (2.) Activision
4. (5.) Sony Computer Entertainment
5. (10.) Take-Two
6. (3.) Microsoft
7. (8.) THQ
8. (6.) Ubisoft
9. (7.) Konami
10. (9.) Sega Sammy Holdings
And it still very impressive that only EA and Nintendo are above Activision. Not even the mighty Sony and MS have managed to overtake them yet. I think that Activision has a good chance at regaining the second spot within the next two years … but they will need to get some hot IP to stay in the race for number one.

4Wow … I hadn’t even noticed but MS actually tumbled the most … down 3 spots … more than anyone else. I wonder how that happened with Gears of War and Lost Planet and Dead Rising and Oblivion doing so well this past year. Seems strange to me but I think with Halo 3 they may be able to get back to at least 4 and regain the lead they had over Sony. To think that last year MS was ahead of both Nintendo and DOny and now it has fallen behind both … not a great sign I have to say.
