Fortune declares a Wiinner

June 3rd, 2007 Posted in Business, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360

The endless slaughter of the Wii seems to be at no end, and Fortune is joining the long list on the bandwagon, declaring their winner of this console generation. In fact, the Wii is featured prominently as the cover story of the latest issue. With a little bit of math Fortune calculates that each Nintendo employee on average generates 2.5 million dollars worth of profit for the company. This beats the likes of other major companies such as Google ($994,000) and Microsoft ($624,000).

The usual pronouncements are made within the article, 6 months later the Wii is on sale while retailers can’t seem to sell of PS3’s and have even resorted to discounting them. Everything down to the blue-ocean strategy is re-hashed. While these are old details, the true story lies with another large company declaring defeat. This is such a major turnaround, less than a year ago Nintendo was the underdog, but obviously no longer. When will Sony or Microsoft for that matter admit there is a problem? Probably well after this current generation has past, but by then its too late.
