For all those of us who love the intellectual chess-like thrill of strategy games but don’t like the pace and flavor of real time strategy games there will soon be a new option. The genre of much more relaxed, turn-based strategy games will soon have an interesting new member.

While these sorts of games range back as far as the NES, they primarily have either a fantasy bent, or sci-fi in nature, are mostly based on battles on land. Japanese game developer Irem Software is changing this by taking an old side-scrolling favorite and breathing new life into it. Old school gamers will remember the addictive side-scrolling spaceship battles where the plot inevitably involved humanity struggling against extinction from an alien foe, with their only hope resting on one pilot with the last/most advanced ship. Unless they plan on the handheld game being fiendishly difficult you can probably expect to have a larger fleet in the PSP game.
