Every system has their quirks or areas that people like to needlessly talk about. For the Wii that one area is its current state of online and the Friend Code system. Most people hate the way it’s been set up, when superior and easier to use systems like Xbox Live already lead the way. Fans aren’t the only ones that agree, as EA has chosen to go their own route with Madden 2008, and will not be using friend codes to take the game online.
Damian: Madden Wii doesn’t support the Wii friends system during online play. This is something we’re still working on with Nintendo. For now our online play uses your EA Nation Persona to search and manage your EA Messenger account.
Of course, not all is doom and gloom with the system. EA is still working according to the quote closely with Nintendo, so hopefully some middle ground can be worked out. EA has built in a party mode that will utilize Mii support and track your statistics against friends. I guess it goes to show you with every quirk there is a stroke of genius, and Mii’s happen to be it for the Wii. If only Nintendo would better utilize some sort of overall Mii code instead of a Friends list for every game, a lot more people would be happy. Then again, it’s still early, Nintendo has said little to none about their online titles, and we don’t even have any yet!
