Quake Wars Sells Out To In-game Advertising

It wasn’t surprising when EA put in-game ads in Battlefield 2142 (including some spyware here and there), since it was, well, good old EA. But now more and more games are fitted with in-game billboards, first Counter-Strike and now Quake Wars, the upcoming multiplayer shooter from Splash Damage and id Software.
The developer confirmed today that the game will feature in-game advertising which will be “appropriate”. “Appropriate for a futuristic shooter, just as “appropriate” as the ads in BF2142 were. Either way, this is a huge disappointment, as even the not-so-greedy developers are now taking advantage of in-game advertising.

advertising in any form is pervasive unless it’s for products found in game. I didn’t buy BF2142 because of the ads and I’m not buying QW. The only way they can get my money is if they make the ads and option to turn on or off. paying $100+ for entertainment and then having to put up with advertising defies the point of paying so much for it in the first place. Unless it’s free, ads have no place in games.

Who cares. The more money they get, the better games they can make. It’s not changing the gameplay, it’s not even changing the graphics - it’s just replacing a made up billboard (or whatever they’ll use), with a real one. Big deal.
