And here lies half the problem with the digital distribution age. Without the need to create an entire fleshed out product, companies having taken to farting out a 1.5 downloadable version of key franchises, in anticipation of the actual thing. The same now applies to Wipeout, which 1up questioned Game Director Tony Buckley about. While he wasn’t very forthcoming, he did say an HD version of Wipeout was currently in the works, with a full out Wipeout title planned for 2008. The former would likely be announced at E3 or a little bit later.

For better or worse, this is just a small tease before Sony users can get their hand on an actual wipeout title. We’ve seen quite a few projects get this sort of treatment, and it is hard to say if it strengthens, worsens or just causes a franchise to remain neutral in the public eye. Yes we don’t have to wait very long for a small morsel, but that only puts the real thing off a little further away.
