Smash Bros. Dojo today introduced another new item coming for the forthcoming version on Wii. Before you sigh that it’s not a new character, you may actually be pleasantly surprised that this item brings forth many guest appearances. Essentially the Assist trophy acts exactly like a Pokeball. Obviously though, they were introduced to allow for more guest character appearances of the non-Pokemon breed. When thrown, a random character will appear that cannot be controlled, but has a specific attack pattern. Three of those characters were also revealed, with more to come over time.

The first is the Nintendogs puppy as seen in last year’s E3 trailer. His function is to basically block out the screen for a limited time, so that all players cannot see the action going on. We also have one of the hammer bros, who chucks his hammers reminiscent of the Mario bros games for damage. Finally we have Samurai Goro from the F-Zero series. He appears to run across the stage slashing violently with his sword.

It’s certainly a good compromise that they have reached in developing this game. While we’d love to have as many playable cameo’s as possible, there reaches a certain point where there is simply too much. With a huge number of playable characters you run into balancing issues, and simply so many conceivable moves you can assign. Of course there are a lot of great characters that just don’t have an arsenal of moves large enough for them to make it work. I’m sure we’ll have some more character dropped on us shortly, especially with E3 around the corner.
