Sony: “The future of UMD is bright”

Despite the long load times and the fact that it’s receiving relatively low support from the movie industry, Sony is adamant that the Universal Media Disk format is the future. John Koller, Senior Marketing Manager for the PSP defended the PSPs media format, stating that the future of UMD looks “bright”, even for movies.

“The future of movies on UMD is great. We saw a 35 per cent growth year-on-year from 2005 to 2006, which clearly demonstrates a growing interest by consumers for UMD movies.”

Funny he should say that, because several top movie distributers decided to reduce support for the UMD in 2006, specifically Paramount Home Entertainment, Warner Home Video, and, get this, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Koller didn’t mention any recent numbers to support his claims about the UMD. not to say that there’s no chance of an upgraded UMD that could diminish some of the drawbacks, but Sony will have to put up quite a hard fight before UMD has any chance at over coming digital distribution of media.
