id logoEver since it’s explosive launch last November, there has apparently been an unwritten rule stating that the Wii is not to be questioned, and for some reason Sony was on the receiving end of criticism. Well, today Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, broke that rule questioning not only the Wii’s future as a console for everyone, but he also challenged Satoru Iwata’s strategy to break down the walls between novice and hardcore gamers.

“I don’t know that it’s a solvable problem, because I think that the thing is, is that your tastes change from a novice gamer to a veteran gamer or a hardcore gamer. When you first get in and play a type of game, everything is new and a challenge, but as you get experience you want different and greater challenges, which necessarily make a game hard to approach as a novice gamer.”

Heresy! In all seriousness, he does bring up an excellent point. There’s going to be a time when the people that enjoy Wii Sports now will eventually move on to Zelda. As of now, Super Mario Galaxy seems to be the only game in Nintendo’s line up that achieves this kind of universal appeal.
