Sony announced the new, lighter, slimmer, PSP at E3, pleasantly surprising fans of the handheld. Sony’s Patrick Seybold confirmed that the old, fat and chunky PSP would be phased out when the new version is introduced.

“The newly designed PSP wil replace the original PSP design starting in September with the $169.99 PSP Core Pack and the $199.99 Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack.”

The current PSP retails at $169 (core pack), so it seems like a good idea to replace it with a better version. Much like Nintendo did with the DS and DS Lite.
