Sony Sells 1 Million PS3s In Japan. Seriously
July 18th, 2007 by James Hyde in Business, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox360
According to Enterbrain, a very credible source when it comes to sales figures in Japan, Sony has sold over 1 million PlayStation 3 consoles in the country. Yep, the ever so poorly selling PS3 has surpassed the magic number, even though it has been outsold by the Wii 5 to 1 for the past three months.
PS3 retails for around $255 in Japan, it has sold more in North America (1.5 million units), while costing twice as much. Even Europe, at three times the Japanese retail price, has seen better PS3 sales than Japan. Of course, both the U.S. and Europe are larger markets than Japan, plus there always the high VAT in Europe.
The main competitor, the Wii, has sold almost 3 million units in Japan so far. Xbox 360 is far off in the distance at 400,000 units sold, and that’s since 2005. Photo via Kotaku.
