Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive Pricecut
July 26th, 2007 by Brian Lockhart in Xbox360
It seemed as if Microsoft had all but given up on the Blu-ray HD DVD format war. While the bundled Blu-ray player in PS3 is still arguably a smart move for the format (perhaps not the brightest idea for console sales), it does at least have a decent install base in comparision. Since Microsoft didn’t seem to be doing all that much with their HD DVD drive for the 360, it was easy conclude they were waving the white flag.
Now however we learn that a price cut is in store for the drive add on, as well as added value. While the price cut from $199 to $179 is minimal, you’ll be able to also choose five titles from the list for free when you purchase the drive. Five titles would probably be running you close to $179 as it is new, so this is certainly a solid deal. Although finding five quality titles from the mix may be a bit of an issue, they are:
Apollo 13
Blazing Saddles
Casablanca
Chronicles of Riddick
Constantine
Dukes of Hazzard
Four Brothers
Tomb Raider
Perfect Storm
Rundown
Seabiscuit
Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow
U2: Rattle & Hum
U-571
We Were Soldiers
Unfortunately though, with the format still largely undecided, no one wants to make a decision except for early adopters. We’ll soon see if the added value is enough to make 360 owners take the plunge.
