Xbox 360 65nm CPU In Production
August 1st, 2007 by James Hyde in Business, Hardware, Technology, Xbox360
The 65nm version of the Xbox 360 processor is now in full production, according to Chartered Semiconductor, the manufacturer of the CPU. Production began on the 65nm CPU, codenamed “Falcon”, in the last two quarters, and is expected to be in retail Xbox 360 units this Fall. The smaller and cooler CPU will certainly help the growing overheating problem that Microsoft is struggling with, not to mention that it’s quite cheaper to manufacture, something that should result in a price drop. Furthermore, the 45nm version is expected to be ready within 18 months.

I hope my system breaks down around December so that I can send it in and hopefully receive a unit that has the new chips in it. That would be great … otherwise I will have to go out and buy a new one and trade my old one in for games and cash.

It’s very good that Microsoft are improving the console slowly and steadily over the years. It means we don’t have to wait longer for it to come out (it came out in Nov 2005, not now) and it gets cheaper as it goes along. I don’t feel bad about it, i’m fine with my 360 Core, never gives me any trouble. It’ll just make 360 sales and reliability even better.
Oh and hey Anuban, i remember you from GS.
