Japanese Hardware Sales Through July 29th
August 4th, 2007 by Brian Lockhart in Hardware, Nintendo DS, PSP, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox360
Strong sales of Hot Shot Golf 5 have finally rocketed the PS3 out of the depths of hell in Japan. Taking over fourth place position, it has for once beaten out its predecessor. Coupled with what we have been hearing about the PS3 in North America due to the price drop in July, it is, for once, good news for the Playstation 3. While the Wii is steal completely out of reach hardware wise, the PS3 is for the first time since it’s European launch outselling the 360 on a week by week basis.
Unlike North America though, these sales are merely driven by a strong software release, so expect those numbers to very quickly retreat next week. Also important to note that Wii numbers shrunk despite the release of Mario Party 8, the top selling game of the week. Of course it’s easy to blame supply constraints, but there has been some rumblings about the Wii not being completely sold out in Japan. Of course, the Wii is merely on the cusp of the holiday season, so it’s expected to still sell strongly once it’s actually getting a good flow of titles.

Those Japanese really don’t like XBox 360, do they? Next year I think we’ll see a reversed version of that best-selling console list.

Why do people keep making a big deal about how poorly the 360 is doing in Japan … of course it will always trail behind Sony and Nintendo. That is never a surprise and really points to the Japanese choosing their own country’s offering then the U.S. … mainly because MS has never really understood what kind of games that market likes to play … while Sony and Nintendo get it. I think in the case of Japan it boils down to a cultural thing.

Well, sony and nintendo do wierd games. They focus on RPG’s. Not to be mean but people in japan dont really have lives at all. They barely have any land like most of us (countries) They are over populated and the country is like one big city. So it’s hard from to grow up like me. WHere I could call me friends and have 10 on 10 football, then go to my baseball practice.
They dont have that life style. Plus they go to school almost all year round. I think they play RPG’s to basically have a life inside of a game that they cant have in america/ or anyone country. Do you know what I mean at all? Im basically saying, they live their live’s through a machine, where me and u can go out and actually do it. That’s why nerds love RPG’s here, cuz they spend 70 hrs on 1 game bguilding a character and never see the light of day :-\

“choosing their own country’s offerings” I don’t agree. Wii is selling great in both Japan and USA. Why people of USA don’t choose their own country’s offerings?
It’s those Japanese gamers that always hate USA creations.

More bullsh*t charts from Japan, check out ELSPA for weekly UK, for UK game buyers.

I have to disagree with Wicker boy about Nintendo and Sony doing weird games and focusing on rpg’s. The earlier entertainments sytems, some of the games that were largely successful were rpg’s like dragon quest, zelda or final fantasy, besides the plumber mario. It was a winning formula that even works overseas so why change from it?
And that you pointed out Japan has geological constraints compared to others….I think that has little to do with it. It’s different culture and it’s pretty much where the video gaming boom was strongly supported.
Thanks for discriminating against the Japanese even though you didn’t mean it, it’s like stating your mom’s fat but not meaning any offense, but clearly there is.

Well, Sasukex.. It’s hard to say man. They dont play FPS games really. My theory is somewhat corrected, my sony fans choose the PS bc of the RPG’s. The 360 is doing so good cuz people now (sony people/nintendo gamers) arent all RPG fans. Before sony(ps1,ps2).. xbox wasnt as popular as much as the sony base. But, most gamers enjoy
Sports
Racing
Action/Adventure
FPS
so on and on..
You can get a 360 with the same ports for a cheaper cost here in the US. For Nintendo selling well in America, I finally found one yesterday. I sat and held it, held it for a couple of mins and decided not to buy it. Then I saw another guy do the samething. I thought to myself. I would really love to get this system. But, no games for it.1-3 game’s dont cut for me, I have to be able to play up to 20-50 upcoming game’s. Where the ps3/pc/360 are doing well.
If the wii doesnt get more title’s it ll flop badly. The cube had more of a selection like MGS,RE1-4,SW RG 2-3 and some others.. not as much which the system failed cuz of it. Right now the wii is mainly selling over the new controller. If it doesnt get game’s anytime soon, I see a victory for the ps3 or 360.

Man, you would think everyone has a DS-LITE already over there! sheesh lol. Honestly, the war between the Lite and the PSP is getting more interesting. As being 20 years old, married, a new father I can only play on my computer *hard pc gamer*, and sports on the console. If I were 7-16 again, mom and dad always driving me to place’s, bus rides to schoo, etc.
This device would be awesome, not only does it have awesome games the LITE doesnt have it can play
Movies,Music,Video(tv shows),Game’s,online play. It’s one sweet device. Not bad for only 160, I consider it as a Iphone basically.. but no phone.. I think for what It can do it’s AWESOME. One thing nintendo does well, that crushes all handhelds.. like the sega one, it uses far less power

Sasukex why would you only quote a part of what I said … the way you put it takes what I said COMPLETELY out of context … try reading it again and hopefully your comprehension skills will be able to understand what I said.
In the future please don’t butcher people’s statements and make it appear they are saying something they aren’t. I was not talking about the U.S. market … my COMPLETE statement was specifically targeted at Japan.

Sports
Racing
Action/Adventure
FPS
These are what true gamers play, my friend.
The only good RPGs are Final Fantasy. The rest is poor.

“The only good RPGs are Final Fantasy. The rest is poor.”
I guess that’s one mans opinion SasukeX.
And the whole thing about Japan was BULLS… AEG!s is right Wicker Man, that statement was discriminating, stupid and ignorant. Come back when you actually know something happening outside of USA. They have a different culture, it’s another part of the world, and they just dont like FPS. So what, me neither.
August 7th, 2007 at 6:26 am
In relation to Wicker man saying if he was 7-16 again …its funny because you said the PSP is the device to get, yet the sales figures in Japan or most parts of the world say otherwise. And true your a father, but thats why the DS/Wii is selling greatly because it appeals to a lot of poeple over different ages…you said so indirectly yourself “you would’ve thought everyone has a DS in Japan” (something like that)
True not everyone likes RPG’s, and it’s also true then that not everyone wants to play 20-50 games or is hard a core gamer in which the Wii (not to forget) was to aim its audience at everyone.
I can certainly agree that Wii needs more titles though, but it kinda gets you wandering why there are so many 1st party games for the Wii…In my opinion ( or theory, I guess) I think it goes back to targeting everyone as their audience and using Mario which is hugely known and mainstream more than GTA or KILLZONE will be able to keep that audience captivated.
However I do not deny that the PSP/3 is building momentum…
August 7th, 2007 at 7:11 am
He was not talking for all countries outside Japan.
And FF Games are not only my opinions. The’re top rated everywhere. So I guess that it is not only me who rates them -_-.
And based on what you say it seems that Japanese are the only one to have a culture that leads to not like FPS. In other words they’re different from the rest of the world. Your statement is more stupid.
