Well, I got a little angry when I read this, but now I clearly remember that some articles (I forgot where I found them, there were on some french websites testing new DX10 cards) already warned us in november-december 2006 ! Saying something sardonic like "Warning, new DX10 cards won't fit with the probable DX10.1 improvement that will be made in the future"... It was also said : "Consider that you buy an outstanding DX9 card and not a powerful DX10 card" (speaking about the GeForce 8 series).

Well, at that time (early 2007) I wanted to buy a new powerful PC, I saw the tests and benchmarks and bought a GF8800 GTS 640 Mb... Incredible card... I read those advices but I just wanted the best card at the moment.

In conclusion, I don't regret my choice, because :

- DX9 titles work perfectly, even with some extra-tuning (for example, with Oblivion mods increasing graphic quality)
- DX10 titles will work not because of the card, but because of the drivers (everytime it's the same : we must wait until the manufacturers develop optimised drivers, as with STALKER - DX9 with 20 FPS on GF8800 GTX --> 60 FPS after new drivers)
- Game publishers want the best possible audience : even now a lot of people don't want to buy new high end cards every 6 months... Most of players still have ATI X1*** series or GeForce 6/7 series. So they won't say "This game is DX10.1 ONLY" but they'll offer DX9, DX10 and maybe DX10.1 renders at the same time.

Believe me, we don't have to get mad : this was announced, DirectX has always been developped like that and GF8 series will still own for many years, just not being able to display some minor changes.

I have no issue with microsoft continually developing products. My beef is with the graphics vendors. Presumably everyone knew what the target spec for DX10 was. If they didnt they should have said so loudly to Microsoft. Presumably also everyone knew what the Vista target spec was. The graphics vendors were saying these products were Vista/DX10 ready. The first real version of Vista will be SP1 (the US governent didnt touch the first release of Vista !) SP1 is also the version with DX10.1. Therefore to declare Vista suport in the Nvidia 8800 series was rubbish without DX10.1 support. To say "oh dear Nvidia always screws early adopters" is also not acceptable. Freeupgrade, Product recall or class action suit seem like the options to me.

The Wicker Man
It sucks of course, but maybe we all should learn from history.

When DX9 was released, Nvidia released the lovely FX5xxx series. Wonderfull cards, except when DX9 games finally came, they SUCKED at rendering DX9 specific functions.

I have no hard evidence, but as I recall, the 8800 series isnt really that great at rendering DX10 specific functions.

I do believe im sticking with my trusty 7900GT until nvidia releases the 9800 series.

The Wicker Man,

Dx10.1 is like directx 8 and 8.1, 9b and 9c ect... It is the same thing since the birth of directx -_-"

Microsoft will not stop updating directx only because you spent so much of money in your PC ...

The world of the hardware is in perpetual motion, microsoft never lied on this subject ...

Zac Richards you are wrong ... Like i said it was the same with directx 8 and 8.1, direct 9b and 9c and some other.... -_-'

Don't be worry like that, you will be able to install directx10.1 even with you 8800 but it won't be able to use directx10.1 features.

we dont get any exact news yet... and microsoft is also not stupid enough to release such very bad announcement.. If this were true, some gaming laptop like ASUS G1S or other will put their ultimate curse on ms..

At some point devs will develop for the LATEST version of DX10 ... this 10.1 may not be the one as it has come on the heels of DX10 very quickly but it is going to happen ... the GPU mfgs need to figure out a strategy and fast.

The the past, a card would support any version in it's DX level range, ie. all DX8, all DX8.. So this is really stupid, especially considering the price of graphics cards these days.

Microsoft are going to break something.

For what I've read DX 10.1 will only work under Vista SP1 and not work on the latest DX10 enabled cards. This means that developers really won't bother putting 10.1 features in their games as the market for them would be way to small. The updated Dx10.1 doesn't bring anything new graphically to the table it just changes some underlying structural things (16bit to 32bit for something, and something else about 4x AA enabling at some other point).

Anyway, the moral of the story is that a)It's a pointless upgrade and b)Developers aren't stupid and I really don't think they'll bother with 10.1

Wow ... this is incredible news that is really hard to believe ... I can't believe that there would be no work around at all for this? Something sounds really odd about this ... cards that are selling for $500 bucks will be out of date in a few months? Nah ... no way there will not be some kind of work around for this ... people would be in a major uproar if this really is true. Also sales of the 8800 model card would come to an immediate halt and there is no way Nvidia is going to lose millions of dollars worth of investment. Nope ... this story is either bogus or a work around is going to happen. Logic dictates that clearly in this instance.

Also, it wont even do the next 3 months. How can it? It cant even max out crysis.. the very first real real real dx10 game. I knew this, but I feel they keep saying get this and get this and get that. Make a card, let it have a good life cycle and stop ripping people off.

Misfit, are u dumb as hell?IM not saying anyone forced me but when a company releases a card.. saying u need this to run the future of gaming and lies about it I get mad. I wasnt an early adopter, I waited many months before buying it. Crysis was suppose to be out next month so I bought the cards...

SO what if they ll still be good, my point is that a retarded 9200 still could update to the latest dx9 patch.

Also misfit, Im mad they tricked us. They knew what they were doing. The 7600-7900 pwn all of the dx9 games. They lasted for awhile. I can afford 2 9800's, im feeling the pain for the other people that just bought new 8 series video cards.. lied by nvidia about something.

Side note, u dont need vista for halo 2,u dont need vista for dx10, u dont need vista period.... I should know, hell.. I have it, I choose xp way over vista. The pc gaming is hurting now, this will hurt the pc gaming world. A good share of pc gamers bought the cards thinking it will max out games for the next year.. which wont do the next 3 months...

Also adding, your card will still work fine, it just won't perform some of the new graphical features in the same way..
