Wii Sales Crack 10 Million Worldwide

August 10th, 2007 Posted in Hardware, Wii

Nintendo has yet to make any announcements, but you can bet they will come the official NPD numbers next week. According to VG Chartz, which is an amateur, although fairly accurate measurement on system sales worldwide, the Wii total sales are now sitting at 10.1 million. Decent buffer room ensuring either the Wii’s milestone, or it occurring officially very shortly.

What does this mean for the Wii? It was able to do what 360 did with nearly a year longer. As the 360 sits in the 10.3 million range, expect total Wii sales to surpass the 360 within the next 2-3 weeks at the current pace. One thing is for sure, no one can officially deny the success of the Wii as it’s about to take possession of first place. Apparently scaled back, but cheaper hardware seems to be the way to go these days, we’ll have to wait and see how this changes the next generation of consoles.

In the less than a year this has managed to do amazingly and prove so many people wrong. Man I cannot believe that it has almost caught up with 360 after just a year … in less than a year they will have surpassed it … well unless Halo 3 does indeed cause a massive spurt in sales .. that and CoD4 … well at any rate not the real war is ON!!! It is going to be very exciting over the next few months to see where this goes. And the poor PS3 is just not even part of the race this holiday season. Oh well there is always next year. And actually I wish I could buy one now while it is still backwards compatible with tons more games than the new ones missing the hardware chip.

Anuban this is bs.. yeah the wii sold 10million faster then the 360 and the PS3. I know 8 people with the wii, not 1 person plays it anymore. You guys dont understand, the 360/ps3 are bought from gamers.. the wii bought from non gamers/girls(not so much into gaming).. I know, I talked to many moms.. and always heard this line ” my daughter wants that!”

Yeah the wii is a cood device, but the graphics are holding it back. When im playing games like crysis(pc), and the console players are playing halo3,mgs4,splinter cell 5,sw force unleashed, madden next ge,sports next gen, bioshock,bf bc,bf3,star wars battlefront 3,ut3 and the list keeps going…

  3. The Wicker Man Says:

Yeah the wii will probably change gaming with the movement of the controller or maybe it’s a fluke. About 10-20 million people are waiting to by a 360 or ps3.. the time isnt right yet. The average gamer is 11-24.. what does that tell u?Most of the gamers live with mom and dad. THey cant go out and buy a system anytime they want, I see the 360/Ps3 killing the wii in sells.

So what, the wii sells more console’s. But, what games does the console have? zelda?mario galaxy? a rm of re4? MP3? ok… the system is dead.. no more games.

The ps3/360/pc share a better share of game’s. It’s like buying a nice car engine(v8), but no fuel/fluids,oil to run it. The wii is short on oil(games)

  4. Anuban Says:

Games for the system are coming man and people may not be playing their Wiis as much now but they are not getting rid of them either and the market is pretty good … so I still say that this is great news for Wii owners. Now with MP3 coming and SMB coming by the end of the year the sales will pick up even more.

We have completely different opinions about this … but the thing is the numbers back up the fact that the Wii is not a fad … it did not fade away even though there are not that many games you may like on it. Graphics have not hurt the sales of this game in the least so I don’t know why you even brought that up. This is a console and so console players are not only playing those games you mentioned for the other consoles but they are playing games for this console as well.

How is this even up for a debate at this point, when the sales and continued shortage and demand of the system remain sky high .. and not when good games are coming and people are still excited about the future of this device. For example the lightgun attachment is something all Wii shooter gamers are looking forward to … it promises to really change the way shooters are played. So yeah man until I see evidence of a real slow down and the Wii is sitting on shelves by the bunches I have to stick by my guns. The Wii is hot hot hot and as far as I can tell it is just getting warmed up.

You keep saying how the system is dead and the PS3 has better games and more people want one of them … however, there is nothing to back up your statement while all evidence points to the contrary at this time. And really man don’t even attempt to tell the future … you certainly didn’t see this success of the Wii coming and you know you didn’t think it could basically catch up to the 360 in less than a year.

So just wait and see … you could end up being correct but so far the next gen belongs to the company with the least amount of advanced technology which may seem hard to believe for more hardcore gamers but now that gaming is exploding and more people who don’t fit the typical gamer profile are entering the market the dynamics have been altered and so making a prediction now is very difficult and you need to use reliable data when you can.

I also have to say that you sound like a gaming snob … I mean the fact is that anyone who plays a digital game is a gamer … you cannot have a narrow view of what constitutes a gamer anymore. So yes some gamers do indeed what a 360, or PS3 or better yet (as real gamers would tell you) a hardcore PC … see the thing is gamers have different tastes and it is pretty insane for gamers to start saying that the games they play are real games and other games are not. That doesn’t even make any sense. So the Wii is also bought by gamers but gamers that play different games from you. You don’t want to start sounding as bad as the PC gamers who think that unless you game on a beefy rig you aren’t a gamer. They hate all consoles.

Now you also talk about software … well let me tell you that actually Wii software sales are pretty strong. I keep up with the sales charts on a weekly basis and Wii software is hot. A lot of 360 games do much worse than some of the games you consider kiddie games. Just one example:

    - The Darkness – a next gen shooter that has solid graphics for the 360 … in 6 weeks it has sold 213K

    - Wii Resident Evil 4 (that remake as you put it) – in 6 weeks it sold 230K

So just from this you can see that the Wii can hold its own well even when the game is actually an old game ported over to the Wii … and The Darkness is a new game with much more impressive graphics but it did not sell as well. And there are plenty more examples.

So really just because you don’t play the games on that platform you really should not put down the console or the gamers who enjoy it. And like I said more games are on the way and even being short on games it has kicked in the teeth of the mighty PS3. Now this may change but not anytime soon. The Wii my friend is far from dead … I don’t even know why you said such a thing.

  5. Evander Says:

I think the Wii IS a Next Gen console, but not how everyone else is looking at it.
Sure the other two have great graphics, but so what? The graphics have always improved. They’re new, but yet its still old. The Wii is Next Gen because of how you play it.
    And fads definately don’t sell 10 million…
I was excited when I first heard about the Wii, although a little surprised when I heard about it. But I’m proud that something so little and seemingly insignificant has done so well.

Anuban: Wow, great comment. And you are so right Anuban. Amazing how some people still believe the PS3 and 360 is on the brink of some kind of revolution, that they will by some incredible magic catastrophe outsell the Wii 10:1. People also said that with the PSP > DSlite. “People want serious games on their handheld, not those kiddy SH.. games.” They also said the PSP would get momentum and kill the DS. They were so wrong, and I predict the same with Wickerman and friend”Z”. Good writing Anuban, keep it up

It’s funny how people focus there attention so much on the graphics yet in reality the imaging aspect generally takes a back seat to the making of legendary games. It takes something extraordinary to really make a game stick in our minds, and with that in mind game developers often try to rely on cheap tricks such as the graphics in attempt to accomplish this. In truth a game merely needs to keep up with graphics at best, making “pretty pictures” is a nice selling point but it again it rarely makes the game. While many will argue this fact however it’s the “fun factor” that makes it or breaks it. Might I remind you of Tetris? Or how about the initial release of Grand Theft Auto that sported graphics comparable to the classic NES. It’s innovative overhead sandbox style and crude attitude really set a strong hardcore fan base that sent this game rocketing in popularity once it was remastered into it’s more “graphicly correct” 3rd person 3D environment we all know so well. Love it or hate it this game is a perfect example of how sheer game play and revolutionary concepts can create game people actually want to play over and over again despite it’s less than perfect appearance. :)

As far as consoles are of topic, have we forgotten what history has taught us or has the infamous consoles such as the Neo-Geo and 3D0 evaded us? These systems was sheer revolutionary game consoles of there time barking spec comparable to the PS3 and 360 of today, yet once again that “revolution” also came with a hefty price tag that was several hundred dollars more (about $2000-$400 dollars more approx) than it’s $200 dollar competition. Granted, this was some years ago but due note the difference between the minimum wage of such eras has not greatly inflated since then, which is am amazingly deciding factor when it comes to market success. Remember software providers will always opt for the most popular system by far as long as it’s licensing doesn’t eat it alive first, in which from reports Nintendo is willing to open it’s doors to any prominent title (mature or not). This may spell bad news for Sony and Microsoft. :(

I’ve been an avid gamer since the Atari era and seen countless would-be systems come and go. I’ve not owned a Nintendo machine since the N64 as I once too got caught up in the lights of the “next-gen powerhouse system” only to find myself falling short. Interesting enough that the original Playstation to whom stole the thunder from it’s champion Nintendo by means of what was to be a peripheral for the Super Nintendo, the infamous SNES-CD.

Mark my words Sony did not get to the top by means of having the most powerful system available, it got there by means of availability. Yes, the price was right and the doors was open to providers who carved a massive library of titles that left the Playstation untouched for many years, a library only comparable to it’s predecessor’s before it. Believe me it did not get there simply because of it’s ability to produce pretty pictures alone. :)

Personally I am still a big fan of Sony as there Cell processor specs has had me awe struck since it’s tech specs was released. Like the amazing DEC Alpha cpu, it is a gem amongst stones. I would love for Sony to prevail as this would make the Cell chip affordable in just about anything and could even give Intel’s dominance a good run. However I am afraid this may only be a wet dream at best for those who marvel processor architecture. As Sony and others have simply forgotten to research the lessons of the past, Nintendo on the other hand, has lived most of this history.

Don’t think for a second the Wii is just a fart in a wind storm, as you will be clearly mistaken. As a Sony fan I tell you the Wii is in fact “fun”, and the very fact that every daughter, grandma, and preteen child is waiting in line somewhere for a piece of Wii, is making it far too dangerous for those fans like myself.

(Final Note) I recommend to those self proclaimed hardcore gamers out there who believe there system is superior simply because it’s got the power, think again, and might I suggest switching your preferred gaming platform to the PC instead. Consoles are made to be disposable “pre-relic TV toys”, rarely upgradeable, and have been trailing the personal computer market features for years. Without question the personal computer is still by far the best for those who demand high-output gaming, and will remain so until the PC and the console game units literally become one once more. We may not be too far off from this point, however still not there yet, so until then a good $600 dollar investment if spent wisely can keep you ahead of the game. Throw in a few $100 dollars for routine upgrades and you will easily keep up for much less.
