Japanese Hardware Sales Through Aug 5

August 12th, 2007 Posted in Nintendo DS, PSP, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Software, Wii, Xbox 360

Last week was a crazy week software wise for all the big three consoles. Mario Party 8, Hot Shot Golf 5 and Oblivion all lead to higher than normal numbers. Things are lowering off, but one of those that dropped that doesn’t normally was both Nintendo consoles. The Wii in particular received a 20% drop. Regardless it’s still ridiculously ahead the other consoles in Japan, but with PS3 actually moving some more units for once, Japan could very well be the first territory where the PS3 takes prime first place position. Well, second to Nintendo DS that is…

- DS Lite: 135,729
- Wii: 61,498
- PSP: 33,886
- PS3: 24,289
- PS2: 12,784
- Xbox 360: 2,691

Maybe the drop has something to do with the production numbers? At any rate I still doubt that the PS3 will be catching up to the Wii in Japan anytime soon.

Zzzzz…. more REALLY relative figures from the borin Mr Lockhart… any chance of dropping him before the site dies?

  3. Brian Lockhart Says:

I think I only need to point to the third top story of August to find that “no one” cares about figures. Next time leave the personal attacks at the door please.

Wii is dirt cheap the PS3 will never pass it for that soul reason.

Console hardware sales are a vital part of the news coverage, how else are the fanboys supposed to know if their console is winning (or losing)?

But seriously, the sales in Japan are important to compare to sales in the EU/U.S., and are certainly important for the analysts who always manage to predict a new winner each month.

The “boring” part is perhaps that the DS/Wii is constantly leading, across all territories. Not a good thing to be reminded about for Sony/Xbox fanboys.

Jeff: Actually the PS3 is “dirt cheap” too, it costs somewhere around $270 in Japan… I think the Wii is at $180 or something (not sure).

The fact that Wii sales are dropping and PS3 are increasing shows us that Japanese are becoming more interested at PS3!
