On several occasions, Nintendo was questioned whether the Wii would ever be seeing any potential DVD playback features. Since before the console’s release, it had been decided that it definitely wouldn’t be a priority, as most families already own a DVD player of some kind. Because of this, third party modchips were released to add this kind of feature, but that’s not quite conventional for the traditional gamer. However, a FAQ on the official Nintendo of America website may give further support to the speculation that this kind of feature will be introduced.
The question was whether the Wii could playback CD’s and DVD’s. The answer was simply “The Wii console released in the end of 2006 does not have the feature to playback music CD’s or DVD’s.” This would lead most people to believe that 2007 models are capable of playing back these formats. So who knows, maybe we will be getting some kind of firmware update that will enable gamers to finally watch a video format that has been ignored by Nintendo for many years.
