Xbox 360: Red Ring Of Life?

August 13th, 2007 Posted in Hardware, News, Rumor, Xbox 360

The ridiculously high number of Xbox 360 failures might not be so ridiculously high after all. It turns outrrol.jpg that the 360 may have another red ring code other then the ring of death. The code in question is to signal to the player when the video cables have been disconnected. The difference between the two is that the video cable ring is a full circle, while the ring of death, which signals overheating is only three quarters of a circle. Naturally, when some people saw the video cable error they sent fully functioning 360s to be repaired by mistake.

Microsoft is reportedly going to disable the full ring in future 360 to prevent more confusion. It would be interesting to see a statistic showing just how many 360s were sent in for repairs unnecessarily, though it’s highly unlikely Microsoft keeps a record on that kind of information.

I had this happen to me when I first got my 360 home, as I thought to plug it in first to make sure it worked before hooking it up to my tv. Luckily I was smart enough to think of that possibility before freaking out and sending my 360 in for repairs.

Can’t we go back to the days of Windows 98 when there was one signal for everything? Back when the blue screen of death meant that it’s time to get a new computer?
