PS3 Stress Test Results

August 14th, 2007 Posted in PlayStation 3

We all know that Xbox 360s aren’t known for their amazing performance in heat, but have you ever wondered how well the PlayStation 3 fairs against the elements? PS3 Vault gave the PlayStation 3 a series of stress tests to answer this question, and the results might surprise you.

The experiment started out pretty straight forward. Part one involved testing thePS3 in a regular home environment with a constant temperature of 73˚ F (or 22˚ C). For the whole 108 hours, which is an entire four and a half days straight, the only reported “incident” was a”vibration” coming from the disk tray after twelve hours. PS3 Vault says that this only lasted for twenty seconds.

The second part of the test took place in the back of a freezer van. Naturally, this was to test how well the PS3 performed in a cold environment like, say, Canada. The screen and controllers were placed outside of the van, only the PS3 unit itself was exposed to the cold. The temperature for this phase started out at 50 ˚F (10 ˚C) and was gradually brought down to 0 ˚F (or -17.7 ˚C). This time, performance of the PS3 become noticeably lower when the temperature reached 0 ˚F. There was also a problem with the cords connecting the PS3 to the screen which were malfunctioning because of the moisture. Despite this, the PS3 itself lasted to 108 hour duration without breaking.

The final, and most amazing, segment tested the PS3’s performance in hot, as well as humid conditions. This time the PS3 was tested inside a sauna, with a initial temperature of 100 ˚F (38 ˚C). For the last day the temperature was slowly increased to 120 ˚F ( 49 ˚C). Astonishingly there was absolutely no reported affect on the PlayStation 3’s performance, although there was a “slight burning smell” after the sixty four hour mark.

These results seem a little on the too good to be true side to believe entirely, not to mention the source is obviously pro-PS3. On the other hand, the PS3 is an extremely well put together machine. It is likely that the PlayStation 3 could do better in environmental tests like this than any other console. I won’t believe these results are 100% true until the Myth Busters recreate them.

Man you’re pessimist. They should be true. But like the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, people never know this things when they buy the console.

Well, yeah I do play devil’s advocate a lot, but I’m not saying that they’re down right lying. I mean I would imagine that there would be noticeable performance issues with the PS3 after four days in a freezer or a sauna.
