EA Changes Its Own Wikipedia Entry

August 16th, 2007 Posted in Business, News, Offbeat

Since it’s now possible to see who makes changes to a given article on Wikipedia, or rather, where the IP comes from, people have been looking into some of the recent changes. A few days ago the Fox Corporation was caught editing an article, and now EA Games gets caught too, for editing, or rather, removing a paragraph that was critical of the company. They also removed founder Trip Hawkins name from the article. Here’s what was changed.

This part was deleted,

“Electronic Arts has from time to time been criticized for its employment policy of requiring employees to work extraordinarily long hours—up to 80 hours per week—as a general rule and not just at “crunch” times leading up to the scheduled releases of products.”

… and replaced by this pathetic line:

“Electronic Arts has led the industry in reforming work/life balance issues that are endemic to the software industry.”

The change was made from an IP address coming from EA’s Redwood offices. It’s not uncommon for companies to change or remove critical parts of their Wikipedia entries. At least now we know who’s doing the work.
