MTV Betting Big On Games, $500m Big Ones

August 16th, 2007 Posted in Business, News, Online by James

GameDaily reports that MTV will invest half a billion dollars in gaming over the next two years. That’s a massive amount from someone who isn’t really a big player, besides owning Rock Band. MTV chairman Judy McGrath says,

“We’re putting well over $500 million behind building our games business across all of the brands in our portfolio … I’d like to see more game applications on some of our current big brands across the music group.”

Earlier this year MTV invested $100 million in their Nickelodeon casual games service, which is a part of the $500 million investment. MTV has recently acquired GameTrailers, Harmonix for $175 million, and their parent company Viacom bought game service Xfire last year for $120 million. They have even been rumored to take over 1UP from Ziff Media. As you can see, these guys are serious about their games.
