Ubisoft for better or worse ported a lot of junk to the Wii right around launch. It also, thankfully, resulted in a valuable lesson. While ports barely moved off the shelves, both Red Steel and Raving Rabbids, the only two titles built ground up for the Wii both have sold over 1 million world wide. This was all well before the Wii had a large install base. Fortunately, Ubisoft now seems to have gone back and recommitted themselves to the Wii with quality titles not ported from other systems.
Today they’ve announced Cranium Kabookii, a casual title based on the extremely popular board game Cranium. Few board games have managed to find mass success recently, but Cranium has brought around a bit of a family board game resurgence. A few details about the title were also revealed, such as red shaded glasses that would allow only the wearer to see on screen clues. Although if it’s anything like those secret coder glasses back in the 90’s, you could usual decipher the “hidden” text if you really looked at it. The other looming question is how they will handle a game. Presumably it will be priced in the same region as the actual board game, so it would be nice to have enough original and different content to warrant it over the board game. Or perhaps promote a dual purchase for rabid Cranium fans. Cranium Kabookii hits the Wii later this year, watch for more details probably to be showcased at Leizpeg.
