Warner Bros. is getting serious about game development. Not only are they setting up long term plans for themselves in the gaming industry, they want the gaming branch of the company to have complete freedom and indepence in their division. That naturally means not only will they develop movie and tv spinoffs in the gaming world, but would like to take new IPs head on.
βIt is vital to be a fully-functional publisher. We are not just an arm of a business that is simply going to leverage the movie properties that Warner has β we are going to be a creative force as well.β
One of the most interesting things about the move is that they are planning on taking back control of some of the licenses to be utilized to their game division. Specifically licenses like Superman, Batman, Harry Potter and The Sopranos. It’ll be interesting to see how EA reacts as Harry Potter in particular has generated a lot of revenue for the company. With only two movies left, will the public really be interested in future adventures in the Potter universe. And can there ever be a decent Superman game? That’s certainly a challenge that remains to be seen.
