Japan hasn’t always appreciated Microsoft when it comes to gaming. The Xbox 360 didn’t exactly sell like hot cakes when first released in the East, and only managed to sell a decent quantity when Blue Dragon came out. Speaking to Eurogamer at the Leipzig Convention, lead designer Tohru Murayama explained that the fan base in Japan is not large enough to justify a release for Virtua Fighter 5 for the Xbox 360. The PS3 version has already been on shelves since February, and the developers are pleased with that version.
Some features that are key to the 360 version is the online mode. In any case, if Japanese gamers want to go head-to-head with real competition, then they can easily visit the many arcades located in the country which carry the game. It still isn’t completely decided if Sega decides to ignore this release, but it seems like the most smartest business move to make.

1Sega doesn’t want to release Virtua Fighter 5 in Japan because the Xbox 360 version includes Online play, which would cause a smaller number of people to play Virtua Fighter 5 in the arcade. VF5 is still popular in the arcade in Japan. The PS3 version of the game doesn’t hurt the popularity of the arcade game, because if you want to play someone real, you need to use the Arcade, since the Playstation 3 does NOT include Online play, and it even has an disappointing Versus mode, because Custom characters cannot be saved to a memory card, like they could with Virtua Fighter 4 on the PS2.
Sega is STUPID…they think that the Xbox 360 Virtua Fighter 5 will hurt the money they will make. But that is NOT TRUE…VF5 will EARN a LOT of money for Sega in Japan!!!
