Halo 3 Nets $170m In First Day Sales

September 26th, 2007 Posted in Action, Business, Xbox 360

Who would gave guessed that Halo 3 would break records by earning $170 million in one day? With all the millions Microsoft spent marketing the game for the past few months, creating hype (or rather, hysteria), it comes as no surprise, really. Microsoft just announced that the $170 million were grossed only in the U.S., where Spider-man 3 previously held the record. Worldwide, the game has probably grossed well over $200 million.

Although they didn’t provide any data to back up their claim, Microsoft is expected to release more accurate numbers in the next few days, if not, we can always look forward to the NPD numbers early next month.

Good for Bungie … I love the game and think it is fantastic that it is doing well and bringing so much more legitimacy to video gaming as a real entertainment industry and not some silly thing for nerds, loners, and kids.

I completely disagree… videogames are becoming like Hollywood, remakes and remakes of games just to earn more money for the big guys (hell, just look at EA).

This is the same thing that ruined the “art” in movies, and it will ruin the “art” in video games.

There is no art in video games man … there is just gaming … I am so sick about hearing how games are art … they are NOT! They are merely forms of entertainment and that is what they are meant to be. But whatever to each his own … all I know that legitimacy is a good thing. And again I am very happy that such a great game could be made in this day and age and not get caught up in the art debate … it is about having fun.

If you want art go to the library and read some art books or better yet go to the museum … but please leave my fun action games alone … go be a painter or sculpter if you want to be thought of as an artist. Heck I am studying to be a game developer myself and the last thing I want to be thought of as is an artist. Nope .. I am a game developer who makes game for people to have fun with … there are no illusions for me at all. I think so many people don’t understand what true art really is and I am not about to give anyone a lesson. Take a class if you want to learn. But please stop with this madness about gaming and art. It is so ridiculous.

Certain games are certainly art. If only because they tell a compelling story, they feature great characters, great storylines and plots. That makes them art. Half Life and Bioshock are art. Halo 3 is entertainment. Madden 07 is entertainment.

“art” doesn’t have to be a Picasso painting or a statue or a David Lynch film.

I completely agree with Alex, just look at Zelda, Shadow of the Colossus, and games like that… or all the great adventure games with stunning storytelling.

Movies were like that back in the day… where the story and characters mattered… now it’s all about big budgets, car chases, gun fights, explosions and celebrities.

That’s exactly what games like Halo 3 are for videogames…

games are art, well some are, and films are supposed to be too. don’t forget that games and movies are both forms of entertainment.

I hope you only speak for USA there buddy. In the rest of the world, they still make “ART” movies, as you all call them.

  8. James Hyde Says:

Yep Kaiser, was only talking about Hollywood :)
