New York Times Unimpressed With Halo 3

Despite the game reportedly earning approximately $170 on launch day, the New York Time’s Charles Herold states the third Halo is just Halo 2 with better graphics.
Halo 3 is Halo 2 with somewhat better graphics.
That’s all you really need to know. If you loved Halo 2, you will feel just the same about Halo 3. If you played Halo 2 and couldn’t figure out what all the fuss was about, Halo 3 is not the revelatory experience that will change your view of the series forever.
It doesn’t stop there; Mr.Herold states that the equipment adds no depth to the experience. He even goes as far as to say that the game’s plot is a short, predictable “throwaway” story. Fortunately, he wasn’t bold enough to insult Halo 3’s multiplayer.
The article doesn’t state any solid reasons why Halo 3 isn’t a great game, it just seems to go against the grain for the sake of it. Of course, I highly doubt Charles Herold will actually dissuade anyone’s decision to purchase the game.

i feel that the new york times has a terrible opinion. the game is completly changed. the weapons are changed and are so different. the games setup is genious. the way you can do anything from one screen and with any one. halo 2 was over rated i feel. it wasnt even that amazing of a game it was repetative and boring. you can do so much more with the forge mode and all the different game types. creating a character is more advanced and the skulls in the story are a lot of fun. every one just has to complain about something. if you say that the hype for halo 3 was to high thats only because you made it so and u got worked up about it.

If you say that bungie hyped the game up to much i dont see your point. all their hype got them to have the fastest selling game ever. it was brilliant and i think that the game is excellently done.

Well all I can say again is that the game looks amazing so I have no idea what this louser is talking about. I mean having your own opinion is one thing but out and out lying to the public is garbage. The game is very different from halo 2 in a number of ways and the graphics are MUCH better … not just Halo 2.75 or something … these are some kick ass next gen visuals at work here.
Plus throw in theater and forge and you have a product that is just so much fun and that greatly rewards console players who have imagination … I can’t wait to see some of the movies that will be popping up. So this person either is just another MS hater or he actually didn’t play the game and is going by what he has heard and maybe some early beta.

I feel the same way about Halo… The graphics are in no way comparable to Gears of War… or GRAW for that matter.
Sure the graphics are much better than Halo 2, but Halo 2 isn’t the benchmark, Gears of War is.

Many parts of Halo 3 are just as good if not better than Gears including the lighting and the main models .. in fact Master Chief is more detailed and looks way better than any of the GoW models or any model I have ever seen in a video game for that matter. Throw in the fact that the areas in Halo are HUGE!!! and still the graphics look great .. plus the Art Direction is better … there are more varied environments and the colors are more brilliantly displayed in Halo 3 as a result of the Art Style.
So for me it is as good as Gears overall … in some areas Gears win and in others Halo 3 is the clear winner. Halo 3 also runs smoother as far as frames go … there is never any slowdown and there is always more going on as far as battles and ships in the air. And another important thing that shows how technically solid the Halo 3 engine is … no texture pop ins like in Gears and Bioshock and other UE3 based games.
Anyway it is not a big deal to me because these are my two favorite 360 games … and they are only seperated by a tenth of a point or two (with Halo being just a tad more fun to me and the better of the two games).
Oh yeah Halo vehicles are the BOMB … there is no comparison in Gears … and actually the vehicles in Halo 3 look more real than the ones in Gears … definitely the edge for vehicle models goes to Bungie … at least once again imho.

Anuban, there’s no way you can compare any graphical aspect of Halo 3 with Gears. Granted, the HDR lighting is sweet, but so is it in gears.
I don’t care how big of a Halo fanboy you are, you cannot compare the two graphically. Every single review has mentioned that the graphics were sub-par compared to the best looking 360 games.
On the other hand, the multiplayer in Halo 3 is awesome, much smoother and more balanced than in Gears (even though it looks a lot like Halo 2).

I’m no Halo fanboy but I do have my opinion and I stand by it. I didn’t say that Gears doesn’t have the best overall but Halo 3 is better in many areas it is that simple … of course the textures were better in Gears on a lot of things but not on the Vehicles and not on the main model. So you have your opinon and I have mine. I don’t know why that such big such a major deal to you. It sure isn’t too me and I am not going to waste time trying to convince anyone to see my persective because it is in the eye of the beholder. For me the graphics just work better in Halo 3. I don’t care about the reviewers in this respect either. It is all subjective when you are talking about graphics … especially when both games have awesome graphics which are truly next gen.

Single-player graphics are much better looking than the Multi-player graphics, which to me don’t look much better than Halo 2 Vista. I would never say the single-player graphics look as good as UE3 or CE2, but they’re enough to satisfy, and it’s a great looking 360 title. The game is what you expect from the series gameplay wise, nothing amazing, it’s just more Halo. Not that that’s a bad thing.. I’ll be playing it!
