Gears Of War Movie Canned?

October 5th, 2007 by James Hyde in Action, Rumor, Xbox360

Gears of War is still the best selling Xbox 360 game, as Halo 3 has been on the market for just over a week, and it’s still a popular game on Xbox Live, second only to Halo 3, of course. A movie is, or was, in the works, but details are, or were, sparse. According to movie site IESB.net, the movie is getting over budget for studio New Line Cinema to stick with the production. But according to the screenwriter who is supposed to pen the Gears of War script, Stuart Beattie (who wrote the excellent thriller Collateral), there is still hope;

“[300] was shot completely on green screen, which is amazing when you actually see the film. It’s probably how we’re going to do Gears of War. There’s no way to build that world any other way, really.”

As he puts it, 300 was entirely shot on green screen (for better or worse), but it still didn’t come in cheap - the budget was around $50 million, which is more than New Line Cinema is willing to pay for the Gears of War movie.

I don’t know why anyone would be surprised … the budget for this movie is going to be like $300 if they want to do it right and I didn’t think Hollywood would take such a big gamble on a video game movie. They really would be better off making the movie a 100% CGI movie …. then for far less money you could have an excellent movie where nothing would have to be sacrificed.

  2. James Hyde Says:

Problem with CGI-only movies is that they look, well, fake, really fake. And it takes a very long time to do all the animation etc. (for 300 it took over a year).

Btw, am I the only one who thinks 300 is far too overrated? There’s no plot, no real characters, there’s nothing really going on besides the battles - the whole movie is like a 2 hour music video. I bet you who ever made 300 used to make music videos… or TV ads… or something similar.

  3. Anuban Says:

I am not talking about that kind of movie … I am talking about something like Advent Children …. that was an exceptionally well done movie and it was all cgi (not hand animated/illustrated). And yes I do think you may be one of the few people who think 300 is overated … I love that movie and the artistic style created by Frank Miller.

300 was overrated, the plot and dialogue sucked donkey balls, constant shouting and slow mo’s does not make a film cool. the fights were the only good bits, however short, few and awkward as they were.

  5. Alex Says:

I’m glad others think that 300 was quite pathetic… Completely agree that it’s a 2 hours music video, or advertisment for some ab workout… But kids loved it, of course.

  6. The Wicker Man Says:

I thought it looked to fake, the blood never stayed on the ground. It just went in chunks and suddenly disappeared.

  7. Renee Says:

300 was based on a Graphic Novel, it wasn’t meant to look real! The Director and Producers had no intention on trying to make the Film 300 believable! It was a truely artistic film and conquered that feel!
    Blood in Chunks… Graphic Novel!
Slow motion… To Convey Graphic Novel!
The Characters were created in the Graphic Novel’s image of them!
Please do your research before you judge a movie and critisize it!

Now, on the note of a Gears of War Film… The interaction of the audience with the film would be divided and much controversy would build up. The Actions of the characters would be hated by some and loved by others… it would be very iffy… Every try to play a game and have the person next to you stay quit without telling you what to do… highly unlikely!
