Valve’s Steam Is Having Problems, Again
October 11th, 2007 by James Hyde in Action, FPS, Online, PC
It seems that every time Valve releases a new game or episode, their Steam platform is having problems coping up with the demand. And it’s no different with the Orange Box, where a lot of users are reporting of very slow downloads (those who purchased it on Steam, of course).
Personally, I pre-ordered the game some time ago, and have been downloading Episode 2, Team Fotress 2 and Portal for over 12 hours now, average speed of just under 50 KB/s. Come on Valve, surely you can invest in a few more servers?

I think this one reason why they do the “pre-load” thing. Rather than having everyone hit their servers on launch day it is spaced out a bit before hand. I know I pre-ordered it when the TF2 beta was announced and when EP2 and portal went live all I had to do was unlock them because I had already pre-loaded them. Though I’m not saying they shouldn’t add some more bandwidth.

Steam is slower now than when I first bought games from them. Steam community is slow as hell.

Whoever buys this on the day and expects to be able to download it at reasonable speeds is kidding themselves. I preordered the game weeks ago, downloaded all the content when it became available at over 500 kbs and got to play it as soon as it was officially released. Cry some more.
