Nintendo Says Gamers Were Bored Before The Wii

October 15th, 2007 Posted in Business, Featured, News, Wii

Nintendo’s Perrin Kaplan, who’s leaving the company in a few months, said in an interview with Advertising Age that gamers were bored before the Wii arrived.

“A major insight that Nintendo had early on was that they saw that gamers were getting bored, even though they didn’t know it yet.”

I didn’t know that I was bored with video games, or maybe I had not realized it yet, as Nintendo says. What about all those gamers who don’t have a Wii, are they still bored playing those boring games such as Halo 3, Gears of War, Supreme Commander, Motorstorm, Half Life 2, Bioshock and all those other games? I bet you they’re not. And I bet you that comments like these are exactly the reason Nintendo fired Perrin Kaplan.

You so nailed it with that line. I’m sick of Kaplan and her lame PR bloopers.

According to Nintendo, they aren’t firing Kaplan, but she is leaving the company because they are moving Big N HQ south (I believe to San Francisco).

  4. Zac Richards Says:

Maybe she meant that games were getting boring, as in repetitive. I can agree with that.

  5. Josh B. Says:

But Nintendo games are repetative and boring ie. the Wii Zelda game which I’ve had since launch and haven’t finished because dungeon after dungeon after dungeon is BORING!

  6. Zac Richards Says:

Most people don’t find it boring though. Each dungeon is different, each weapon is different, each character is different, which is more than you can say for a lot of games.

  7. Josh B. Says:

true Zac, the trouble, I think, is that it feels like everything in the current Zelda was done before in previous Zelda games and it was more of a case of “update the graphics and just rinse and repeat gameplay”.

I REALLY enjoyed Wind Waker as it was a breath of fresh air for the series even though, from what I’ve heard, the “hardcore” Zelda crowd didn’t like it.

Maybe now I’m off work for a while I’ll sit down and try to get through it just for the story.
