Smash Bros: Home-Run Contest Gets Pimped

The Home-Run contest in Melee was a bit of an oddity, but a whole lot of fun. There were a few key characters which allowed you to really send that sand bag flying If you knew exactly what you were doing. In most instances though, the problem was you couldn’t use most attacks, as you’d knock the sand bag off the pedestal.

They’ve fixed that and added a host of other fun options in the process. Truly the team seems to want to take absolutely everything and make it multiple times better this go around (no complaining here). Four changes were listed as part of the update.

A shield protects the stadium walls, which will prevent you or the sandbag from falling off. In addition you’ll need to put enough power into it to break the shield. This should really allow more characters to be competent in this contest.
Two player co-op can take place, not only will you have to be perfect in everyway to achieve that high score, now your partner will have to do the same.

Two player alternating allows you and a friend to take turns and outdo the other.
Finally an online mode will allow you and a friend via the internet to take part in the above. Pretty snazzy.

The real question is, with them bringing back the home-run contest, will we see more similar, for lack of a better word, minigames? If they continue to put this kind of effort in, that really isn’t the worst thing in the world.
