Sony Officially Sells Cell Chip Plant

October 19th, 2007 by James Hyde in Business, Hardware, News, PlayStation 3

There have been some rumors about Sony selling it’s Cell chip production plant to Toshiba, and now it’s official, the plant has been sold for 100 Billion Yen, or 860 million USD.

Sony has been looking to sell the plant, as the production costs are too high for the company. They’re looking to shift away from manufacturing the components to simply outsource it to other manufacturers, like Taiwanese TSMC, who manufacture chips for both ATI, NVIDIA and several chips in the Xbox 360 and Wii.
