Now here’s a pleasant surprise to all potential PS3 owners: the 40 GB version uses the new 65nm Cell CPU (as opposed to the 90nm version). According to German site computerbase.de (translation of the article here), it’s not only the Cell that he been shrunk down to 65nm, the Nvidia RSX graphics chip has also been shrunk to 65nm. In all, the PS3 now consumes 135W of power, compared to over 200W before. And of course, it runs a lot cooler and quieter.
Sony also updated to mainboard, the cooling solution and added an on board battery to save the time when the console is unplugged from the wall. Finally some rather great news for potential PS3 users, now all we need is some good games.

1You know I would really really like to get one of these new SKUs but the no BC is just stopping that from happening. If it had BC I probably would not have upgraded my PC anymore and bought one. But I opted to go balls out on my PC upgrade since BC is no where to be found and I only want to play two new PS3 games and God of War I & II. I guess I’ll keep waiting …. I sure wish the 60gbs units would drop to 399 … I would buy one in a heartbeat.
