Top 10 Games You Must Play This Holiday Season

November 3rd, 2007 Posted in Articles, Business, Featured, News, PC, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360

This holiday season is the biggest in gaming history, with so many highly anticipated games coming out, it’s easily getting complicated, and expensive, if you want to check them all out. Here’s our top ten list of games you must play – either buy, rent or borrow – this holiday season.

10: BlackSite: Area 51

BlackSite: Area 51 is one of those games with a lot of potential, from the gorgeous visuals, to scary settings (Area 51, doh!), and of course, a ton of creepy aliens to shoot . Release date: November 14.

9: Kane & Lynch: Dead Men

A mercenary and a psychopath escape from prison and team up to fight “The Seven”, a vicious gang. The co-op based games offers fully destructible environments and a relentless AI, for not to talk about the visuals. Release date: November 20.

8: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

The Call of Duty franchise finally moves on to modern warfare, and does it in style. True to the franchise, the game has a compelling singleplayer campaign and features a intense multiplayer part. The biggest problem for CoD4 is that there is stiff competition from many other shooters, which is why Call of Duty 4 might get a bit lost among the bigger titles.

7: Hellgate: London

The creators of Diablo bring you Hellgate: London, a post-apocalyptic RPG with FPS controls, stunning visuals and compelling story. What more do you want? Release date: Out now!

6: Mass Effect

Way before its release, Mass Effect has gathered a lot of attention and won several prizes at E3. The action RPG has been in development for a long time at BioWare, and will feature a 40-hour single player campaign, a solid story, great gameplay mechanics and much more. Release date: November 20.

5: Assassin’s Creed

In Assassin’s Creed, you take the role as Altair, an assassin in Jerusalem during the Crusades, where you’ll be able to fully explore the old city, trying to find the best way of completing your job. The game has true next-gen visuals, physics and AI, and is a must for all Xbox 360 and PS3 owners. Release date: November 13.

4: Half Life 2: The Orange Box

One of the two games on the list that’s already in stores. The Orange Box includes Half Life 2 Episode Two, Team Fortress 2 and Portal, ensuring there’s something for everyone. And in case you haven’t played HL2 or Episode One, both are included in the package.

3: Unreal Tournament 3

Epic’s multiplayer shooter makes a solid return, this time with more maps, vehicles and weapons, all rendered with the gorgeous Unreal Engine 3. If you’re into multiplayer shooters, UT3 is the biggest frag fest you’ll get this holiday season. Release date: November 19.

2: Crysis

If you’re a PC gamer, you have certainly heard of Crysis, Crytek’s upcoming Sci-fi shooter. Besides the usual storyline and a tropical setting, Crysis can only be describes as the best looking game ever, provided your hardware is up to the challenge. Release date: November 15.

1: Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy is already out in Japan, where it’s winning hearts and minds of Wii owners. Mario’s first appearance on the Wii will feature all what we loved from the classic Super Mario 64, and take it to new levels, galactic levels, and will also include multiplayer co-op. Wii owners mark your calendars; release date: November 12.

I wasn’t excited about Hellgate London at all, but that picture gives me the jibblies.

  3. Stephen Says:

Ok, Super Mario Galaxy is not even coming out this year and why in hell does this world need yet another first party Nintendo Mario title?

  4. Stephen Says:

To run crysis (since its a EA title) you will neet at least a dual core CPU, a 8800GTS or higher and 2GB Ram, a x-fi sound card would also help. But Unreal Tournament 3 which looks as good if not better will run great on you system along with Gears of War (Made by Epic king of Developers).

  5. poo Says:

    what a crap list.

  6. Aeger Says:

Crap Biased List indeed…… Uncharted: Drakes Fortune should have been right up there in the 1 spot along with Rachet & Clank for PS3……I am now dumber from having read that list.

  7. James Hyde Says:

Stephen: Super Mario Galaxy is coming out in two weeks.

Aeger: Rachet & Clank has been in stores for a while now.

  8. Anuban Says:

Well I agree with at least half of that list … still think Gears of War PC should have been on it along with Timeshift but cool … its still a good list overall. Although I noticed you didn’t put any PS3 games on the list and I think that Uncharted Island is coming up for them.

And yeah Crysis is going to be beastly but I just upgraded my system so I am pretty sure I will be able to handle it … believe me. If not then not too many people can and the sales of this game will not be all that once word gets around.

  9. The Wicker Man Says:

Poo, it’s not a crap list.

It’s a very good list, it’s hard to give games value. You have so many games coming.

Good list, also to the guy that thinks mario galaxy is not coming out. It’ll be out in 2 days :-)

  10. Ewoksrock Says:

I love people who instead of saying “hey, I disagree” just say “this is crap, blah blah you should have said this and that instead”

  11. dan Says:

hellgate london shouldnt even be there.it just sucks period, not even gonna get into details(metacritic have it in the 70’s,so definetely a pass)

Crysis looks waaay better than the unreal engine

love the hardcore games in the list and then you add mario…wtf

  12. Zac Richards Says:

“Ok, Super Mario Galaxy is not even coming out this year and why in hell does this world need yet another first party Nintendo Mario title?”

    LOL. Check your facts.

And why do we need another? – Because they’re so goddamn fun to play.

  13. DP Says:

Crysis and UT3 should be lower than they are, and move up Assasin’s Creed. Everything else is good. Yup, 2007 is the best year in games ever.

  14. mc2w Says:

Check your spelling on COD 4 moderN warfare

  15. Josh Says:

Hey, I disagree. Hellgate: London was overhyped. I’m a little disappointed in the product; it could’ve been a lot better, but the execution doesn’t excite me as much as I hoped it would.

  16. monir Says:

    ^ummm. what?

  17. Macespec Says:

Meh. This list is decent. I don’t think Mario should be number 1, but it should be on there. I think Unreal 3 should have beat Crysis for sure though. Crysis takes so much ram and what not to run.

  18. You're Black Says:

    omg you sux, lol.

this list is okay, could have not used the mario galaxy at the end >.<

  19. Dee Says:

The article was fine. It won’t be the same as everyone’s list, but that is the diversity of gaming.

As someone mentioned I actually do feel less intelligent after reading the useless, vacuous and inane comments from various fuckwits. From the “look my comment is posted!” wankers to the pointless “omg lol” space cadets with a good whack of “I’ll spend 10 minutes of my life just to let everyone else know I think this is crap with poor spelling and no justification”. You are the reason I play video games where you get to maim and kill bystanders because I geefully imagine each them one as one of you annoying cocksuckers.

  20. The Wicker Man Says:

This is why I gave up on most people in the world, this is why.

Dee, I’m black? Wtf? Does it make you feel special to insult people because you don’t agree?

The other didn’t agree and said, I don’t agree. They didn’t misspell MIAMI, and talk about killing them in a video game. You’re gonna be the next retard on the news.

  22. Steven Says:

As much as I’d like to play these games, I really need to get a new PC ($$$) to really enjoy them, or get a 360… *sigh*

  23. jeff Says:

a few right eg CoD4, Crysis, Assassin’s Creed. But super mario as #1. WTF. seriously. WTF.

  24. The Wicker Man Says:

Mario Galaxy is coming out in 07, the download is already open to download on warez-bb.org. Do I personally think Mario Galaxy is number 1? Hell no! Do I think it’ll out sell all of the other games, yes.

I think the list is calculated on what game will sell the most. Mine has to be crysis for my most wanted game, but that’s just me. In japan Mario Galaxy is selling really well. I’m sure it will in America as well.

  25. Mr-BT Says:

“Mario’s first appearance on the Wii…”

Uh, I hate to piss in this guy’s cornflakes, but this isn’t the first appearance. Anyone heard of ‘Super Paper Mario’? (Let alone all the other games featuring him???)

  26. Kaiser Soze Says:

Of course Super Mario Galaxy should be #1 on the list. It’s the most hyped game this christmas. And it’ll probably get higher scores than any of the other on the list. All in all a good list. Although I would have put Kane and Lynch, and Mass effect higher on the list.

Dee: I actually have to agree with you quite a lot.

“I’ll spend 10 minutes of my life just to let everyone else know I think this is crap with poor spelling and no justification”.

And that’s exactly what a lot of people do.

Please argue if you disagree, and please make a point instead of just writing tons of foul language.

  27. Kypster Says:

I’m with Kaiser and Dee. If you’ve got a different opinion… fine, np. We all have different gaming prefs. No need for swearing and insults. Regardless…

Seeing as I work at a gaming store, here’s how I’d rate them interest wise (or in other words, the number of pre-orders we/ve get/gotten) 1. Super Mario 2. CoD 4 3. Orange Box 4. Assasins Creed 5. Mass Effect 6. Crysis 7. Hellgate London 8. Unreal Tournament 9. Kane & Lynch: Dead Men 10. Blacksite: Area 51
That’s just popularity wise so far. Actual stats from out computer. I’m just going by the word of the people who come to our store. Doesn’t mean I’m right. Just a snapshot of my gaming community. That’s also just the ones on the list. We’ve got others that outrank some. Stll pretty close tho. Good list. Thanks James. And yeah, we’ve got a crazy kickass year for gaming.

  28. sollipsist Says:

Great list- how about throwing on just one choice that’s not totally obvious if you want to say something that hasn’t already been said by every gaming magazine, website and press release. Or do you just work for a mall store and can’t stop repeating the reservation pitch when you come home at night?

  29. Physco Says:

WTF YOU FUCKING SUCK, SUPER MARIO GALAXY #1 ABOVE ASSASSIN’S CREED WTF DIE BITCHES
