40GB PS3 Still 90nm, But More Efficient

November 5th, 2007 by James Hyde in Business, Hardware, PlayStation 3, Technology

Recently we reported that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 uses a 65nm Cell CPU and 65nm RSX graphics processor. But since then, Sony has come out and denied that they already switched to the 65nm process, but did confirm that the new 40GB model was indeed more power efficient, dropping from 200 W to 135 W, mostly due to the fact that the PS2 backwards compatibility chipset has been removed, plus the removal of other components, such as two USB ports.

SOny plans to move to 65nm in early 2008, both on the Cell and RSX side, which means power consumption will most likely be under 100W, quite an achievement for a console of its size and power. Are we looking at a PS3 slim for 2008?
