Sony CEO Declares Format War In Stalemate

November 9th, 2007 Posted in Business, News, PlayStation 3

Usually business news involves one company’s CEO loudly exclaiming their superiority over all other competitors. For once we’ve got some shockingly honest and level-headed words coming from an executive. Howard Stringer has said that he believes the format war is locked in a stalemate that for the time being neither side can win. Despite the fact that Blu-Ray sales were 2 to 1 over HD-DVD sales in August, it seems that most people are hedging their bets and sticking with regular DVDs until the format battle is decided. Netflix and similar services can’t be helping the decision be made as I myself haven’t purchased a DVD since I subscribed to the easy and cheap home delivery service. Stringer also said he wished he could travel back in time to a point where it would be possible to unite the two formats, presumably to get things together in such a way that consumers would be happy and all manufacturers would profit from HD technology.
