Super Mario Galaxy: Greatest Game Ever?

It’s not every day that a good game drops on our doorsteps. It’s less often that a great game falls in our laps. But how about when a game actually receives the greatest critical acclaim of all time? That event only happens once a decade. With 31 official sources on Game Rankings contributing to the count, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has an average review score of 97.6 on a 100 point scale. We can all agree that truly it was a great title, but one that has actually, until this point, held the highest averaged review score.
Until this point in time, where Super Mario Galaxy started strongly, but has actually as the reviews poured in climbed the charts. It was hard to say exactly where it would settle, but few probably expected it with currently 36 accepted reviews to be .1 higher on average than Zelda.
Is Super Mario Galaxy the greatest game of all time? Well the critics certainly seem to think so. I guess you’ll just have to wait for our official review when we reveal what a horrible piece of software it truly is. Now excuse me, I uh… have an important meeting, some coworkers have discovered a new galaxy. I assure it’s only professional business.

I thought Assassins creed was supposed to be the best game ever. where’s your review for that?

That review will be coming.

Assassins Creed isn’t getting scores near as good as Mario Galaxy.

True paraprakrti, but direct your attention to a newspost on Penny Arcade from the 14th of this month. It makes an interesting point: reviewers don’t play games in the same manner as everyone else does. Most games get boring if you sit and try to play them to the end as quickly as possible.

Yea, I read that too, it kinda puts things into perspective. And for whatever reason I feel like I should mention the completely unappreciated Deus Ex: Invisible War.

why the hell is mario galaxy rated the best? there are many better games, hell even bioshock and CoD4 are better.

There are a lot of games that go relatively unnoticed. I find video games that don’t get great ratings aren’t necessarily bad or unenjoyable, they’re just not as good in every area as other games. I’ve picked up a few xbox titles that cost me less than $15 which I played for endless hours.

“why the hell is mario galaxy rated the best? there are many better games, hell even bioshock and CoD4 are better.”
That would be blatant opinion.

^true.
but is no one bored of mario anymore? it is exactly the same every time, the puzzles are all exactly the same, the bosses always die by 3 hits by doing a certain thing. mario needs to die, quickly. i was disapointed with teh new super mario game on ds, it got stupidly high ratings from press and average people. the game was awful, i completed it within less than 3 hours, and ive only played 2 other mario games in my life, but even then, i recognised that there was nothign new in any of the puzzles or enemies. the repetitivness is annoying.

This game is the best single player game i have ever played. I have been playing games since the Amiga 500 i own a ridiculous amount of consoles, console games and PC games. Mario is absolutely stunning. Previous to this my favourite mario game was Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES. Don’t get me wrong the other ones were great but this one always was the foremost fun game in the mario series previously to this title.
Its not often you put on a game and completely lose yourself anymore
However i must also point out that when it comes to online Multiplayer Call of Duty 4 is so far the greatest game released.

chook….call of duty 4 the best multiplayer game released? Man you have obviously never played the rtcw and rtcw-et multiplayer games.but hey, tastes vary.
Oh and im gaming since the late 70s when i had a pong machine as a kid then went on to (in this order) a spectrum48k,spectrum128k,c64,plus4,amiga 500,amiga 1200,snes,megadrive,sega gamegear,ps1,N64,ps2,xbox,gamecube,ds-lite,four gaming pcs and my latest purchase was a ps3.
Does that make my opinion any more valid?

It is without a doubt the best game of this generation, and also proves the potential for gaming on the Wii, but I wouldn’t go as far to say that it’s the best game ever. Metroid Prime, Chrono Trigger, and Ocarina of Time could deserve that title though.
