Sony Expects 11 Million PS3s By End Of Fiscal Year

December 15th, 2007 Posted in Business, News, Online, PlayStation 3

Step right up to place your bets. Currently sitting with roughly over 7 million units worldwide, head exec Kazuo Hirai has recently gone on record that he expects the PS3 to have sold 11 million units by the end of the fiscal year (March 2008). With just two weeks of data left for the Christmas rush, that’s about 1 million PS3s a month over January to March.

“Worldwide sales of Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 3 are expected to reach 11 million by the end of this fiscal year, a senior executive said in an interview published Saturday.

Sony Computer Entertainment’s chief executive Kazuo Hirai told the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper he was confident of fulfilling that goal despite stiff competition from Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s XBoX 360.”

Of course, what’s debatable is whether Kazuo is referring to PS3’s shipped and thereby sold to retailers, or if he means those that actually will end up in the consumers hands. Meanwhile, Nintendo forecasted a while back they would be at 17.5 million units shipped, and knowing the Wii sales almost every single one of those shipped Wii’s should be in consumers hands pretty quickly.

£100 on them not making 11 mill. Between 9 and 10 is more realistic.
