DigitalBattle Best Of 2007 Awards, Part 1

December 28th, 2007 by James Hyde in Action, Adventure, Articles, Business, FPS, Featured story, News, Nintendo DS, Online, PC, PSP, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox360

It’s that time of the year, the time where we look back at the year and sort the good stuff from the bad, the fun from the boring, and the surprising from the disappointing. 2007 was a big year in gaming, the biggest in history, especailly at the end of the year, where so many great games saw release.

We’ll be giving awards for the specific genre (e.g. Adventure, FPS), and for the specific platform (e.g. PC, PS3). And at last, we’ll award games that surprised us, games that disappointed us, plus of course, Game of The Year. Let’s get started with part 1 of 3!

Best Action game: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (PS3)
The PS3 finally got a game that delivered what it promised; great story, fun gameplay and superb visuals. Runner up: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii).

Best Strategy game: Supreme Commander (PC)
Supreme Commander, the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, delivered everything it promised, and was certainly worthy of being the spiritual successor to one of the greatest strategy games ever. Massive world, massive armies, and a lot of destruction makes SupCom the best RTS game of 2007. Runner up: World In Conflict (PC).

Best RPG: Mass Effect (Xbox 360)
The first part of a trilogy, Mass Effect sets the bar high for not only its upcoming sequel, but also for all future role playing games. Mass Effect featured hours upon hours of exciting gameplay, compelling characters and great visuals. Despite a few technical flaws, it’s still the best RPS of 2007. Runner up: Lord of The Rings Online (PC).

Best Sports game: Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360)
Forza Motorsport 2 is not only the best sports game of 2007, it’s also one of the most realistic and exciting racing games in the past few years. Hundreds of cars, dozens of tracks and a great career mode gives Gran Turismo a run for its money. Runner up: Skate (Xxbox 360/PS3)

Best FPS game: BioShock (PC/Xbox 360)
Even though BioShock had high expectations, it still managed to surprise gamers with its gameplay, visuals and most importantly, the wonderful story. BioShock is the best FPS game released in a long time, and will remain the benchmark for story driven games for years to come. Runner up: Call of Duty 4 (PC/PS3/Xbox 360).

Best Adventure game: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Not since the original Super Mario 64 has a platform/adventure game been this exciting. Super Mario Galaxy took a long time for Nintendo to complete, and the wait has certainly been worthwhile. It is by far the best looking game on the Wii, and its artistic visuals match any other game on the PS3 and Xbox 360. It’s a must have for any current and future Wii owner. Runner up: Sam & Max: Season 1 (PC)

Best Multiplayer: Halo 3 (Xbox 360)
Halo 3 was the most anticipated Xbox 360 game ever, the most marketed game by Microsoft, which obviously makes it the best selling Xbox 360 ever. While Halo 3’s single player campaign wasn’t anything to get excited over, the multiplayer was a whole other ballpark, taking everything that was great in Halo 2 and taking it to the next level. Runner up: Call of Duty 4 (PC/PS3/Xbox 360).

Best Graphics: Crysis (PC)
If your PC hardware is up for it, Crysis will be the best thing you have laid your eyes on, ever. The highly realistic tropical island (and the frozen version of it), the lightning, the textures, the physics, we could go on and on about the spectacular world of Crysis, which will be the graphics benchmark for quite a while to come. Runner up: Gears of War (PC)

Best Story: BioShock (PC/Xbox 360)
The underwater world of Rapture, its citizens, the storyline and the hero, are all reasons why BioShock has the best story in a game in 2007, and also the reasons why it will be remembered for a long time by those who played it. Not since Half Life has it been so exciting and exhilarating to play a videogame. Runner up: Mass Effect (Xbox 360)

Tomorrow, in Part 2, we’ll award the best games for each platform in 2007. Stay tuned.
